Welcome fellow Krootlings,

I am working on a entry for this years Golden Demon (UK). I had an idea to sculpt an entire Kroothawk from scratch. Ofcouse I needed a sketch first of how he would look like, and today I made a sketch of his head in PS.
user posted image
I already made a start on his head, made from Fimo clay and a layer of Greenstuff. I'll post more pictures of his head once the head is finished.

But I need some advice about the rest of his body and wings. Shall I give him quils? What type of wings will I give him? Feathered or Reptile like? And will he get an tail?
Please help me.

Cheers!

[EDIT]
Here's another update,

I would say have the head like that of a knarloc but with a slightly more protruding beak.

choosing between, reptilian and feathered is hard.
to have the wings reptilian is what most modelers see as what kroot would have
but fluff disagrees with that saying they are of avian descent.

if you are look on wikipedia then you will see that the kroot bird is supposed to resemble the 'terror bird'
(basic drawing below)

apparently they could swallow an averge sized dog whole!
here is some info in them:

"the now extinct Moa of Australia along with the so-called terror birds which ruled the grasslands and forests of North and South America between 65 million years ago and just a couple of million years ago. These killer birds were three meters tall and up to half a ton (500 kilograms) in wieght in some cases, with a skull the size of a watermelon sporting a broad beak shaped like an ax blade, and at least one species even developed hands!"

Thanks krootveryhappy.gif

But that's a Krootbird, this is what Wiki says about the Kroothawk;
QUOTE
Kroothawk - An avian seen as sacred by the Kroot. The Tau believe this to be the Kroot's evolutionary ancestor.

I have no idea what you mean by 'avian', I can't find it on Wiki either..

cheers

I thought that the kroothawk was supposed to like a vulture

dunno what anyone else has heard.

avian, hmmm. I'm guessing that that means aibourne, avian - aviation (flying)

[flicks through dictionary]

Aha .....

..... 1. Of or pertaining to birds.
2. Of, relating to, or characteristic of birds
3. Pertaining to or characteristic of birds
4. Relating to birds
5. Of, relating to, or derived from birds

there you go, 5 entrys basically saying the same thing!

I just love it when a dictionary repeats itself kroottongue.gif

A though popped in my head earlier today you could try removing the arms and placing the wings there and put hands on the ends of the wings. There is a Dungeons and Dragons monster very much like that. Its a thought maybe not a great one  but something to think on krootveryhappy.gif

Just for fun:

Remove the lava and add a beak then we might have something:

Why can't a hippogrif be a kroot hawk. It'd be an easy conversion with Knarloc Rider and Pegasus parts:

finally I have found a few descent photos/sketches.
firstly:
Jadeclaw Lizard #10

alter the head, add quills, ta da!

Jadeclaw Lizard #5
user posted image
make it a bit less feathered/more reptilian, add quills, change head.

Jadeclaw Lizard #3
user posted image
not very good realy

Jadeclaw Lizard #2
user posted image
looks a bit too much like a chicken. make it look more avian, replace feathers on head with quils

Reptilian Parrot: from the avatar series
http://www.musogato.com/avatar/pics/c-parrot.jpg
doesn't look krooty but if you kept the basic structure of it then this could be what your looking for.

if your looking for historical, like the terror bird equivalent
this is your bird. this is the bird that kroot are supposed to have descended from.
Archaeopteryx
prehistoric bird
and

hope that helps.

Thanks everyone for the comments krootveryhappy.gif

I finally have an update! Here's a very WIP version of the head, it still needs dozens of GS layers. This is just the basic form with no details at all kroottongue.gif

Anyways here's the picture

Hey Pfreck,

I was looking through the old Kompletely Kroot site pictures and I came across "Rigante's Kroot Conversion":

The cool Knarloc rider conversion aside, this could work really well for your Kroothawk. Minus the rider you could throw some Pegasus wings on this and call it a day. Unless you prefer to sculpt it from scratch. What do you think? krootveryhappy.gif
