Did you like the set up better before or after Mildred became the secretary for the company? I loved the character and her loyalty to RS but I also missed the tension between RS and the other three who knew the whole story.

I liked it after Mildred came. It gave a nice little comic interest to the show.

Mildred was ok, but I hated the changes that came with her. Bernice and Murphy were in on the creation of Remington Steele from the beginning so they didn't need to have Laura remind them 5 times/episode "Mildred, he's the boss, but I'm in charge." I also liked the competition between Murphy and Steele.
At the same time they simplified the cast they also simplified the plots. At the start there were very complex A, B, and C plots. They borrowed from classic movies and had great guest stars from the same era. As the show progressed the plots became more and more simplified. First the decrease in case from 4 to 3 then only 2 the last half-season that is too gruesome to mention. On balance, as much fun as Mildred was at times, I think they should have kept the original cast. |

The fury of ten thousand suns is too mild to discribe my dislike of Mildred.
Murphy! I loved Murphy! And Berniece, as obnoxious as she was, was miles better than Mildred. |

<_< I am not sure what I think of Mildred to be honest.
I came late to the Remington Steele party, starting to watch it partway through the second season of the original run. So it wasn't until ten years (+/-) later in syndication that I saw the first season with Murphy and Bernice. I will admit, that season 1 was light years better than later seasons (and don't even bring up the final half season when Pierce should have been Bond), although season 2 was still pretty good. The complexity of the plots and sub-plots in season one are marvellous, and among the best in American television. Season two started eliminating the episode complexity, but it really wasn't until season three that the plots became much more simplistic. But, back to Mildred. Was she the worst thing to happen to RS? No. SHe brought a different dynamic to the show, being signifigantly older than the other main characters. She couldn't serve as a rival for Laura's affections as Murphey did, but she did offer another comic presence as one who didn't know the secret of the show. So, I do not hate her, but I also do not think she was the best character ever. :asleep: |
