welcome to gotham city
Madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes is a little push and it seems these days all Gotham has gone to Hell. As one by one Gotham’s citizens seem to be following in the footsteps of Gotham’s two biggest patrons. Some wish to rise up and save it from the brink of madness, while others wish to watch the world burn. Where do you stand in the war for Gotham’s streets, with Harvey Dent and Gordon’s silent protector or do better fit in with the Joker and his better class of criminal. Or just maybe perhaps you stand in the middle, trying to make sense of the chaos. Ether way prepare yourselves, a dark dawn is on the horizon.

The dark streets that had once been teeming with life had fallen curiously silent as the sun began to set over the distant skyline and the creeps of Gotham city came out to play. Among the numerous present on that night would be the dangerous Dr. Kirk Langstrom, who had finally managed to slip away from the decaying halls of Arkham Asylum.

It had been obvious the last month had been difficult on the committed scientist, having been some of the worst treatments that Arkham Asylum had to offer. As day in and day out Kirk had been forced to endure a series of tiring and painful treatments, as scientists worked around the clock to repair the corruptions and abnormalities in his genetic code. And despite the fear his creation had caused and all the innocent Gothamites he had managed to butcher, it’d seem like everyone forgot about the doctor as he was locked away with the grotesquely insane and Kirk could do nothing but watch as the terror, infamy and intrigue he had inspired slowly began to fade.

But that was going to change; Kirk had a plan brewing, one that’d once again bring fear and panic into the streets of Gotham city. And tonight would only be the beginning, a taste of things to come and a simple showcase of what the amoral mind of Dr. Kirk Langstom was capable of. He’d perch there patiently in the dark confines of the old alleyway with what seemed to be a small group of creatures at his feet, neither human nor animal; they were grotesque to say the least. Their bodies were bent and contorted in positions and ways thought imaginable by the human skeleton, their thin layer of skin a sickly pale and pulled tight over powerful muscles and all of them nothing more than wild and beastly doppelgangers forged from human flesh.

They all seemed to writhe and twist in agony as pools of their own blood began to erupt from their mouths and Kirk began to survey the creatures he was about to unleash upon the people. Kneeling down to their level he’d run he’d gaze with amazement and awer, still unable to believe what he created…a scientific miracle, creatures whose likes have been made in his design. And later he’d be able to see them in action when they finally awoke from their drug induced daze. Being able to watch from afar, Kirk knew he’d find intrigue and excitement as they began to hunt, feeding on whatever they could find in a poor attempt to satisfy their never ending hunger. It’d probably be a display that’d last a few hours at most before they dropped dead, however it’d be sure to amuse Kirk and to bring fear and reverence to his name.

Kayleigh walked swiftly down the street, hardly making a sound. The bag of steaming Chinese food in her left hand was making her stomach rumble in anticipation. Ten more minutes and she’d be curling up on her couch with a pair of chopsticks and a movie, at which point she would offically declare the day over and let herself relax.

Normally, she would be home by now, not walking in the narrows, but she had stayed at the station later than usual to finish up the paperwork that she had been neglecting. It had grown into a larger pile than she had remembered, and her orders were to finsh by tomorrow night. Tomorrow was her day off, so she had no real choice but to try and finish everything tonight. Miraculously, she finished sooner than she had thought possible, and therefore decided to reward herself with fresh Chinese takeout. She had walked straight to her favorite restaurant, which wasn’t that far of a walk from the station.

Unfortunately, the quickest way to reach her apartment from this restaurant was through part of the narrows. Despite the time of night, Kayleigh still took the shorter route, eager to get home. It was not the wisest of decisions, but it’s not as if she were unarmed. Her standard issue revolver was still tucked under her shirt and into her belt, rubbing against the small of her back, and her ankle holster contained a slightly smaller revolver.

It was a little eerie, how quiet things were at the moment. It almost felt like she was all alone. Kayleigh knew that was just an illusion though. Regular business had virtually stopped as the sun set, but a different business would be opening up in the shadows. You never knew who was watching or around the corner, so she stayed alert, just to be safe.

As she walked, Kayleigh occupied her mind by choosing what she was going to watch when she got home. It would be a comedy, for sure; she needed something to improve her mood after paperwork. Maybe she would have a M*A*S*H* marathon? It was an appealing idea and she found herself smiling a little as she turned and cut through an alleyway to the next street over.

It was only a matter of time before his creatures would awake and begin their hunt and for the first time Kirk would see his prototype creatures in action, testing their cognitive and physical limitations. Everything seemed to be in place and the experiment ready to begin, all he needed was some motivation, something to spark their interests, something that’d appeal to their twisted minds and savage instincts. And hovering over them, he’d have his prayers answered as he saw one of his creations slowly begin to open those expressive human eyes and trying to sample the scents that hung in the air around him…he had picked up the scent of something…something he liked. Looking into the distance, Kirk made out the vague figure of what appeared to be a woman as she walked through the shadows cast by the towering buildings. Looking as the former human tried to rise, Kirk stared with a morbid interest ”Well I see we have our first volunteer” he commented. ”Tally ho” he’d tell the beast..

Stepping back with a savage grin, Kirk watched as the lone monster scrambled to his feet, trying hard to balance on its contorted legs and tried to get used to its new inhuman body. Clumsily it’d fumble through the trash that’d litter the alleyway, tripping and stumbling, it’d take a moment or so, for the monster to find a form of locomotion that it could move around on. It’d take a minute or so of experimenting, but finally it’d manage to walk. And using a proud predatory swagger, that’d show off all its powerful muscles and tendons, he’d approach the prey he had sensed, following the strong scent of the Chinese food she had been carrying.

Standing at the other end of the alley, the creature stood tall, totally confident in its own hunting abilities. Knowing well it’d probably be able to take out its prey without having to resort to any tricky tactics and traps. And as he gazed at the stranger in the distance, the monster let out a mangled growl while it began to rush towards her, with his jaws gnashing, determined to butcher and devour his chosen prey.

Mean while the scientist kept his distance as he watched his creation attack. This would be the field test of his prototype creature and determining how well he had done in his hunt would be the deciding factor for all of Kirk’s plans to come. If he failed to impress his creator, his species went extinct, Kirk would destroy the genome and Kirk would start over designing a new plasmid to infect his victims with, if he succeeded, the retrovirus would be mass produced and distributed to a larger crowd, transforming a new target group into monsters to terrorize the city. And whether his experiment succeeded or failed, ether way it’d be sure to satisfy and amuse the scientist on some level.

It was warmer than she had been expecting, and Kayleigh undid the buttons of her jacket. She kept in on though; the outline of the gun beneath her shirt would be too obvious for her liking otherwise. She sighed deeply, feeling suddenly tired. Kayleigh enjoyed her job, but every once in a while, there came days when she was all too glad to head for home. Today was one of those days, but it was over, and she was heading home with fresh Chinese to her silent and paperwork-free apartment.

At first, Kayleigh didn’t see the thing rushing towards her. She was too preoccupied to even notice the low growl that rumbled down the alleyway before it started running. However, when she did look up, her heart stopped for a moment. Whatever “it” was, it was not human….at least not entirely human. Its limbs were twisted in a way that should have been impossible, yet it was moving surprisingly quickly. She could see the bulging muscles and the deathly pale skin as it passed through a pool of light.

Finally, the adrenaline kicked in, sending her body and her brain into motion. The bag of Chinese food was dropped from her left hand, as her right pulled the gun out of her waistband. Kayleigh squeezed off five rounds in short succession, aiming for the creature’s chest. This is what you get for taking the stupid shortcut. She thought, inwardly cursing her laziness and stupidity. The gunshots were startlingly loud in the relative silence of the city, but Kayleigh doubt anyone cared. If they were noticed, then they would be ignored by people who would rather not get involved.

What is this thing? Kayleigh wondered, mind racing for a way to defend herself on the off chance that 9mm bullets would not be enough to stop the thing. In Gotham these days, you could never be sure what would happen. She saw a metal pipe lying a few feet off to her right, but the idea of using a makeshift Bo staff against a creature like that was not appealing in the slightest. Still, she didn’t see any other possible means, so she made a quick mental note of it before turning her attention back to the creature.

This was not how she had planned her evening.

The shots that rang out proved unpleasant…even painful for the scientist’s sensitive ears as he collapsed onto the moist ground below, grabbing them instinctively as they throbbed with pain. Though as painful as it was for the scientist, it seemed even more painful for his creation which had the mangled flesh pierced by a few of the shots. A monstrous sound seemed to echo throughout the alley as the monster’s wounds began to erupt with blood.

Looking from the distance, the creature’s eyes seemed to glow with a look of hatred and insanity, not seemingly too happy with her actions. Running, he’d try to tackle her to the ground where he could proceed to butcher her alive, making sure she paid for the wrong she had done against him before he could begin stripping off pieces of her flesh.

Meanwhile from the other edge of the alley, Kirk slowly began to rise to his feet as the ringing in his head slowly began to dissipate and once again standing, he’d proceed to continue to evaluate the beast as he took on his opponent. From his actions he could tell that the beast had been intelligent enough to tap into portions of his human brain, allowing it to feel the desire for revenge and the sting of spite, however in terms of its behavior and it seemed grotesquely stupid when compared to Kirk’s Man-bat. Unable to notice the pipe she held or being able to adjust its attacks to counter it. By the way things were looking it seems that Kirk’s newest creature would be a failure.

The only thing that could save Kirk’s plan’s now was to see how the others would react, prove themselves to their creator at they tore to shreds the cop the other had targeted. Standing over them, he’d proceed to nudge them quietly, trying to wake them. However after several attempts and methods, he’d conclude they were unfortunately dead, the transformation having provided way too much stress and shock for their bodies to bear.

Kicking them to the side angrily, Kirk stood behind his creature angrily hoping that his experiment would manage to at least kill one person tonight before being put out of its own misery.

((S’ok, I understand))

Kayleigh quickly rolled to the side, coming up in a crouch, pipe in her left hand, gun in her right.
“Police! Freeze!” She yelled out reflexively, although she doubted the creature could understand her. The bullets seemed to have no effect on it, except to make it angrier. Kayleigh looked to the other end of the alleyway and saw another figure standing there. So much for running. Dear God, please don’t let there be two of this thing.

She trained the gun on the second figure, since it was obviously ineffective on the creature. The bar she held out in front of her, ready to block a physical attack from the creature. Alright, think girl, think! There was a fire escape across the alley and a few yards down. She could make it, hopefully, providing that she jumped high enough, and the creature couldn’t jump very high. Bad idea. She told herself. With muscles like that, the thing could probably jump higher than she could.

Since the figure at the other end of the alley wasn’t attacking, at least not yet, Kayleigh turned her full attention to the large creature. Let’s get rid of you first. The creature didn’t seem to be all that intelligent, so she waited for it to rush at her again. This time, the bullet was going right between the eyes. Kayleigh stood in a fighting stance, pipe held out to the side, gun aimed straight at the creature. If she missed, or if it somehow didn't stop the creature, she was going to have to move fast, really fast.

With that single shot between the eyes, the abomination was finally put out of its misery as it laid there dead in a river of blood that was pooling below it. To say that the scientist had been angry by the outcome of his experiment would have been an understatement, having invested so much time and stolen money into an army of idiotic monsters, most of which died before they could ever be put into any use at all.

Walking over to the poor creature as it laid there sprawled against the pavement he’d simply mutter ”Well I guess someone had to put an end to him, damned thing wasn’t meant to survive” as he slowly bent down to examine the monster and survey the damage done to it over the course of its battle with the cop. As he knelt there, it didn’t give him much comfort, seeing how easy his beast had been overcome with nothing more than a few gunshot wounds and he knew if he was ever going to bring fear to Gotham, he was going to need better subjects to mutilate, people who had been more intelligent and more physically fit than the last generation of subjects he had kidnapped. And as he began to regret the action of settling for just anyone…that’s when he’d be hit with a most interesting idea.

Running his hand over the blood soaked flesh and the wounds, he’d then proceed, to look back at the cop. ”Well it seems the species is now extinct” he’d mutter still gazing at the cop with a spark of resentment in his eyes. ”And I don’t know how familiar you are with the studies Linnaeus or Darwin miss, but whenever a species goes extinct the laws of nature dictate, that another must take it’s ecological niche” he explained as he carefully pulled from the dark contents of his pockets, a silver canister marked with the words ‘biohazard’. Then with a twisted grin he’d say as he waved the can of mutagen in front of him ”And seeing as you’ve stood out as evolutionally superior to my creation, in all fairness, I think it’s you who should take his place.”

Grabbing a garbage can cover for defense, he’d proceed to rush towards her, in an attempt to force her against the wall. ”Breathe deep and count to 10” he’d tell her with a monstrous grin as he approached with the closed can.

Kayleigh sighed in relief as the creature went down, dead by the time it hit the ground. Good thing it's skull wasn't bulletproof, she shuddered to think how things would have turned out if it had been. Suspiciously, she watched as Kirk bent over the creature, examining it. Her gun was lowered, but she wasn't putting it away anytime soon, not until she figured out just what the man was up to.

”And I don’t know how familiar you are with the studies Linnaeus or Darwin miss, but whenever a species goes extinct the laws of nature dictate, that another must take it’s ecological niche”

Kayleigh wasnt sure what he was trying to say, but she had a bad feeling about what was coming next. Her eyes narrowed as he pulled something silver from his pocket. It clearly wasn't a gun, so she didn't react immediately.
"What is that?"

”And seeing as you’ve stood out as evolutionally superior to my creation, in all fairness, I think it’s you who should take his place.”

Bad feeling confirmed. Do I always attract the crazies? She wondered as he picked up a trash can lid for protection. When he started rushing towards her, Kayleigh brought up her leg quickly, delivering a roundhouse kick aimed directly at his face. "Not so fast."

Kirk couldn’t help but grin at the question asked as he continued to hold out the canister, threatening to rip it open at any moment. ”What I have here is millions of years of evolution and not to mention probably one of the most important finds of the 21st century.” he explained vaguely as he approached. ”But more importantly, it’s a strain of a mutagenic retrovirus I developed to mold human flesh into my vision” he bragged. ”Now then I’d really like to discuss the specifics of its ingenious design, but I really am eager to see the outcome of this strain” he told her as he began to rush towards her.

Seeing the round house kick coming for him, Kirk instinctively held out the garbage can lid in front of him, blocking it. The clang that erupted as her foot hit the tin however did seem to have some effect on the scientist as he instinctively clutched his sensitive ears and allowed the canister to drop and roll into the nearest gutter. And as it rolled attentive and alert eyes seemed to track the canister of his biohazardous product as it fell into the gutter, caught within a pile of litter that had been abandoned there quite some time ago.

Snarling, Kirk wasn’t going to let this one get away from him. After all he had sacrificed too much time over the past few months, trying to recreate the conditions of his Man-bat mutagen. Sacrificing time, people and money he simply didn’t have these days. And already disappointed with the outcome of his first generation of rejects, all Kirk had now was the sickening desire to mutilate the one responsible, to make her carry on the mission of the ones she had killed and for the reverence he believed the people of Gotham had owed him.

Already have risen to his feet, Kirk proceeded to swipe his arm as he took off, a poor attempt at knocking her back against the wall. Running towards the pile, he was determined to get there before her, get the canister of mutagen to unleash upon her and whatever people had been stupid to wander the Narrows district this time of night.

As much as she would hate to admit it, Kayleigh had no idea what Kirk was talking about. Mutagenic retrovirus? Despite her ignorance on the subject, she knew that whatever it might be, it was not good. That fact was evident by the look on his face, apparently the creature was his, and he was not very happy about her bringing about its end. Kayleigh was torn between taking this creep down, and getting herself out of there. On the one hand, she certainly would not feel safe knowing that he was out roaming the streets, trying to pull this on someone else; however, on the other hand, she would also rather not get a taste of his little virus.

Her foot hit the tin lid with a fair amount of force, producing a loud clang. Kayleigh grimaced a little at the impact; she hadn’t been expecting him to react so quickly. She blocked his half hazard swing with her right hand easily, but, as her luck would have it, that was also the hand that held her gun. His swipe knocked it out of her grip and it went flying off into the shadows. When he went for the dropped canister, Kayleigh reacted instinctually. She knew that whatever happened, she needed to keep him from getting and opening the canister, as far as she knew, her life depended on it. She dove at Kirk, tackling him to the ground before he could reach the canister.

Kayleigh kept a tight grip on the pipe as she dove, seeing as it was her only available weapon at the moment. She let her momentum carry her into a roll, lessening the impact of the asphalt. She came up on one knee, pipe held out in front of her, ready to strike or to block, depending on which was necessary.

As her mind raced, trying to determine what move to make next, she recalled Kirks reaction when he had blocked her kick. The clang is what had made him drop the canister. He had covered his ears like the sound was too loud. Sensitive to sound? Maybe there was a way that she could use that weakness to her advantage.

It had been uncommon knowledge that Kirk’s ears were extremely sensitive to sound, in both states. A side effect from the scientist’s initial tinkering with his genetic code. And though it had ultimately cured his profound hearing loss, the bat’s auditory system still proved to be rather hard to live with at times.

Being forced to the ground, Kirk’s animal instincts kicked in. With her on top of him, he began to thrash savagely, waving around those powerful arms, trying to claw at her with those long slender fingers and trying to gnash his way out of there. Whatever she had been trying to do to him, it was obvious Kirk wasn’t going to stand for it, one way or another; he was going to break free in profound, maybe even painful methods. After all right now all he had on his mind was to escape her.

He saw her reach for the pipe, which basically told Kirk that any escape would be totally futile, any move he made, would easily be countered. This meant if he was going to get to the canister, he needed a distraction…and fast. Because who knew how long the canister would stay locked in it’s position before it’d be washed away with the litter…or how long it’d be before it’d spring a leak and the retrovirus would be let loose. Looking to the garbage in the alleyway, something caught his eyes. A piece of balled up newspaper, still wet from the puddle it landed in. Still continuing to thrash about, he’d manage to grab it swiftly and launch it in the direction of her eyes; hopefully the paper would give him at least a few seconds of cover allowing him to escape.

Meanwhile in the gutter Kirk could see the litter that stabilized the canister’s position slowly rinsing away with the water that streamed and pooled in the gutter. The scientist had to work fast to get to it. Because the last thing he needed right now is someone else getting a hold of his retrovirus. After all God only knew what would happen if someone else managed to unlock the secrets to Kirk’s discoveries and the processes for eukaryotic gene manipulation became common knowledge for the scientific community.

He was much stronger than she had been expecting, and Kayleigh was sure that there would be bruises and scrapes on her face to attest to that. The wet newspaper struck the side of her face and she quickly reached up and flung it away. He was trying to get to the canister again, which was something that she couldn’t allow to happen. She brought the pipe down as hard as she could between Kirks shoulder blades, hoping to incapacitate him long enough to either get the canister or to get away.

Now would be such a lovely time for backup. She thought. Her cell phone was in her jacket pocket, but she knew that she couldn’t afford the few moments of distraction that it would take for her to pull it out and call someone. She could try punching in a random number behind her back, but with her luck, she’d end up calling a payphone or a disconnected number.

She should make a break for it, run away while he was down. The fire escape was just behind her; she could pull herself up onto it and escape through an open window. However, that would mean leaving him out on the streets so that he could do this to someone else. After a moment of thought, Kayleigh dove for the canister. There was no way that she would willingly become some mad scientists experiment, and if she could help it, she wasn’t going to let anyone else become an experiment either.

If she could get to the canister before he did, then she could either try to run for the end of the alleyway, or try to make it up the fire escape and out through the building. Neither one was the best of plans, but that was all that she could think of for now. Oh well, just so long as he doesn’t find the gun. She hadn’t seen exactly where it had fallen, and she hoped that he hadn’t seen either.

It seemed the newspaper trick did work to some degree allowing the scientist to slip out from beneath her as he tried to make it towards the caniste, which he could only hope was still full. Trying to get up however he then heard the sound the swinging pipe from behind, aimed right for his skull, he'd try to avoid it the best he could. However despite his reflexes, there simply wasn't enough time to get out of the way and as the pipe came down, it forcefully hit is left shoulder blade, forcing the scientist to the pavement again with a few choice words escaping his vocals.

The pipe would give her the head start she needed to get to the can of retrovirus. Grinding his teeth angerily Kirk would finally manage to pull himself up from off the floor. Marching towards, rubbing where the pipe had hit him, the scientist was ready to butcher her alive, by any means nessisary, because there was no damned way he was going to let his mutagen wind up in the hands of the Gotham PD. Though as he rushed towards her, something caught his eye as it glinted off into the shadows.

Approaching it, he almost instantly recognised it as the gun used to kill his creature. Picking up the gun clumisy, it'd be quite obvious Kirk had almost little to no experience with a real wepon of that kind. However, he'd figure whether experience or not, a point blank shot, would work all the same. Approaching her from behind he'd cock the gun clumisly for her to hear as he aimed it for her head. "...don't move!" he'd growl. [/b] "Or else I'll blow your brains out right here"[/b] he threatened as he stood above her. "Now then, listen to what I say and maybe I won't carve you up for the rats"

Though Kirk didn't see it the canister had already sprung a small dent in the side, allowing his retrovirus escape into the small river of rain water that ran through the gutters and whether or not it had affected anything else living in the area would remain to be seen. "Now then...pick up the canister and get up slowly" he ordered, refusing to let the gun down. "Don't do anything stupid" he then added, keeping his finger locked on the trigger.

"...don't move!" Kayleigh froze when she heard the click of the gun being cocked behind her head. Of course he found it.... She took a deep breath to calm herself. This was a situation she had never found herself in before. The last time a gun was pulled on her, it went off before she really even had time to react. She quickly decided that this was much worse.

Kayleigh grabbed the canister from the gutter gingerly and stood up, pivoting slowly to face him. The fingers of her right hand were lightly holding the canister, like she was afraid to even touch it. Truthfully, she was indeed a little afraid of it and its contents. "Alright, I'm listening." With no small effort, she kept her voice fairly calm and even a little casual. Inside though, her heart was racing at a million miles an hour and fear was becoming a lump in her throat. She wouldn't show it though, not if she could help it.

Her mind was racing, desperately trying to figure a way out of this. Unfortunately, no solutions were coming to mind. She was just going to have to play along until she came up with one, and if she couldn't...... Well, you did always want to be a superhero. An image of the creature she had killed popped into her head and she had the sinking feeling that she was supposed to turn into that.

"Nothing stupid, got it." She echoed back, nodding. As far as she could tell, she was screwed. Kayleigh didn't see that the canister had sprung a leak, and even if she had noticed, she wouldn't have attributed any significance to it. Right now, she was wondering what was going to happen next.

Kirk smiled enjoying the position of power as he held the gun clumisy in his grip. He felt like a god as he saw her listen to the commands he had barked. So rarely had another feared Kirk as a man, Kirk having had a reputation as a man who nobody had noticed until it was too late. So seeing her as she held the can with the fear and uncertainty of what he’d do he’d try to enjoy every second of this as he flaunted the gun in his hands. ”Oh you better be listening, because I’m sure you wouldn’t want me to unload a few rounds in your skull” he said teasingly. Truth be told, Kirk probably wasn’t going to pull the trigger and was probably to some degree nervous about holding it, but still he wasn’t going to drop the weapon anytime soon.

Beginning to circle around her like a shark in the water, he’d simply stare at her with that sinister grin and that savage predatory look and rubbing his chin in a jovial manner, he’d begin to mock her as he began to whisper aloud ”What’s next?...hmm, what’s next?” he’d say with a chuckle. Then suddenly he’d stop short pointing the gun towards her face, in a poor attempt to get some sort of reaction from her. ”…I want you to open it, twist the top and pull on that tab…and when it starts to hiss, I then want you to breathe deep and count to 10” he barked. ”And if you have to vomit or have a violent reaction, try to keep it out of my direction” he chuckled.

With the dent in the bottom of the can, the retrovirus had already escaped into the gutters long before she had gotten a hold of it. And it probably wouldn’t hiss with the gas Kirk used to control the infection having probably already leaked out. Though to the extent of Kirk’s knowledge, to him he figured it was still full and ready to burst once she had opened it. As to what the scientist would do upon the discovery his mutagen had already leaked no one could tell, but considering how unstable and crazed the scientist had become over the past few months, it probably wasn’t going to be pretty.

Standing there Kirk would then seem alarmed as a police siren echoed into the night, heading towards their location. The gun shaking nervously as he held it in his hands, Kirk seemed nervous to say the least as the car approached them at an alarming rate….had someone seen the two? Were they coming for him and his creatures? these were the thoughts that went racing through the scientist’s mind as he gazed nervously over his shoulder. ”C’mon hurry up!” he’d shout as the fight or flight instinct began to kick in again. And though there was no proof that the police car had been coming for them Kirk wasn’t going to stick around to find out. Just infect her and get the hell out of there…later appreciate his own handy work as it’d be documented in the daily news
