Hi everyone! This is my first post but not my first time in the forums. I find amazing help when looking at the different (sometimes overlapping) advice when it comes to HE armies and their tactics. I have an army list here that I'd very much appreciate getting feedback from. I'll mainly be versing the dreaded Skaven OOOOOOO!
Prince on Griffon Mage Upgrade to Lvl 2 32 Spearmen with Full Command 10 Archers with Full Command 10 Archers 10 Lothern Seaguard with Full Command and Shields 15 Swordmasters of Hoeth with Full Command 5 Ellyrian Reavers with Full Command and bows 1 Lion Chariot of Chrace 1 Repeater Bolt Thrower 1999 pts How does it look? So apparently, looking at the main articles again, I shouldn't even have archers and I should instead have an extra bolt thrower and possibly an eagle or 2?

Yeah, looks like you have started out with an Isle of Blood set or two, right?
At 2k, your unit of 10 seaguard is not large enough. The spearmen unit is possibly too large. I have had success with running seaguard in units of 21, 7x3. They seem to work well. Ditch the unit of archers with full command and you should be able to combine spearmen and seaguard into 2 units of 21. The 5 reavers shouldn't have full command, just gives away victory points when they are a very light support unit anyway. You should also look at equipping your characters with some items, and particularly a decent weapon and some armour for the prince. To be honest, a prince on griffon isn't a great choice at all, but I realise you are probably just using the models you have to start with, so might as well give him a go for a few battles. The chariot, swordmasters, and bolt throwers are solid. Its not an overly strong list overall, but it will give you a bit of flavour for the High Elves, and if your opponent is mostly based on the Skaven in Isle of Blood then you should get some decent games in. Welcome to the board! You will find it is a bit quiet around here, but we are looking to pick up again. |

Personally I'd drop the griffon in favour of a lvl 4 mage with lore of shadows; i dont find griffons that usefull until bigger points, but its still worth trying him out for a while to see if you like him.
I actually like to have a unit (or two if i can afford it) of 10 archers. I find they help to take out lightly armoured threats (fanatics, weapons teams, light cav, lone characters even) which helps to free up my bolt throwers to chew through the more heavily armoured stuff. That being said i would usually run at least 2 bolt throwers in my list, they are too nice to leave home without. Id personally drop the seaguard and use the points to fill up some more spearmen, and id split the spearmen into two decent sized units rather than one big one. I also like to run my swordmasters in 2-3 smaller units of 9, ranked up 7 wide. Whilst they loose out rank bonus they can usually kill enough (with asf, often re-rolling misses and 2 attacks base) to pose a decent threat, and means if your opponent kills one unit you still have anouther dangerous unit floating around. However they dont have the size to absorb many casualties from shooting. So depends on what you like I guess -------------------- "Most new armies are balanced like a fat, drunken, man with an ear infection on a unicycle."...
