Title: 8th Edition Army Book
strewart - July 13, 2012 03:38 PM (GMT)
There are rumours that the High Elves are the next book after WoC in october, which would put our book at early next year. We'll surely get some big centrepiece type model like every other 8th ed army, and probably another new unit type.
Whirlwind - July 13, 2012 10:04 PM (GMT)
Yeah I heard that too,
I think our new unit will be the Heroes of a Thousand Duels and I am guessing we will get Drake (mini dragon) shock cavalry with VERY haopy Dragon Princes riding them :-)
strewart - July 14, 2012 12:16 PM (GMT)
I sort of hope we don't get mini dragons all over the battlefield... It will cheapen the majesty of the great beasts. And they will have to either have stupidly high points cost for a unit, or have subpar stats, neither of which are all that good for us. I know back before the Sundering, whole units of dragons charged into battle but its just not practical in standard armies sadly.
I'm thinking new unit may be maidenguard returning. Though we may also find we don't get another infantry choice as we have a fair few now. On WS they are also saying some kind of flying chariot, we'll see about that too...
Whirlwind - July 14, 2012 12:56 PM (GMT)
That is true. The Heroes of a Thousand Duels could prove interesting though, I am looking forward to more information on them. They will probably bring back the Everqueen as a special character and have the Maiden Guard and their rules alongside hers.
strewart - July 14, 2012 01:34 PM (GMT)
I have to be honest, I don't really know what the Heroes of a Thousand Duels are.
There have been rumours for a couple of years now that there will be a new Everqueen model. Would be good! I haven't heard anything about Maiden Guard though, they are pretty similar to Seaguard really aren't they? Unless they get a different twist they may not return.
There was a bit of talk of Avelorn being featured a bit more heavily so we could get access to some kind of treeman or treeman unit. Would be interesting.
Whirlwind - July 14, 2012 01:45 PM (GMT)
The fluff on them is sparse but they are some super unit/characters who assisted Teclis and Tyrion in the battle against Nkari (that slannesh greater daemon who tries to make the line of aenarion extinct) and they all have this big fight at the same temple the Phoenix Guard are based at. I may be a bit off here as my memory is not at it's best.
Yeah, Maiden Guard should essentially be WS 5 stubborn or unbreakable Sea Guard clone lol.
I still hold out hope for Belanner (sp?) returning, I have loved that guy since the 5th edition lol.
Let's also hope our Archers either get stronger or cheaper. I also want our Shadow Warriors revisited and making viable again. I really pray they cheapen or improve the Reavers and really put some solid thought into our 'once-great' Silver Helms...
strewart - July 14, 2012 04:27 PM (GMT)
Yeah I agree with all those points, especially shadow warriors and reavers both should be really essential to our army but both are stupidly fragile and quite overpriced.
I also hope they boost Seaguard or give them a special rule of some kind. They are also a cool unit choice that is a bit overpriced, since they are essentially spearmen with 4 point normal s3 bows, which is fairly crappy at the moment.
Whirlwind - July 14, 2012 06:48 PM (GMT)
Yeah Seaguard need something, I am just not sure what lol. A points reduction alone would be sweet. And I think Archers are at least 1pt overpriced.
I think Silver Helms would be more authentic to their fluff if they had a rule similar to the 'Knights Errant' Impetuous Charge rule and they could get +1 attack on the charge or something lol. Also maybe they need to go down a point or two :P
strewart - July 15, 2012 03:38 AM (GMT)
I think silver helms really need to go back to core, maybe even remove or change their barding so they are M9. Heavy cavalry simply aren't as good in 8th ed as they were in 7th, and silver helms simply cannot compete with the same slots as dragon princes. They need to be different. Making them very clearly medium cavalry (core, slightly less AS, faster movement) would actually give them a new role in the army. As a special choice, I don't think they will ever be worth taking over princes unless they become underpriced in points, which isn't good for balance.
I'd like Seaguard to get a special rule more than a points reduction, but I guess either would make them more functional.
Whirlwind - July 15, 2012 09:30 AM (GMT)
Movement 9 medium cavalry in core? Oh yes! I like the sound of that very much!
Maybe Seaguard should get a special rule of Water Striders where they get no penalty for moving across water features :P In the books I read they 'effortlessly' embark from their ships and wade through the foam of the sea as if they are gliding.
strewart - July 15, 2012 03:47 PM (GMT)
That would be more of a fluff rule than anything beneficial since water terrain is quite rare. Skinks have the same problem of hiding better in water features, but there are never any anyway. Still it would give them a bit more of a characterful flavour.
Whirlwind - July 15, 2012 08:24 PM (GMT)
Well the truth is that there is nothing in the fluff to state they are anything other than bow armed spearmen who are good at sea. So they need to either change the fluff to justify some cool rule or just cheapen them lol.
What kind of love do you want Shadow Warriors to get?
strewart - July 16, 2012 01:40 AM (GMT)
Shadow warriors are a difficult one... They definitely need higher BS for a start. If you compare them to Shades (I know, different army) for the same points they get higher BS, multishot crossbows, and armour piercing which really makes them quite deadly. BS 4 s3 bow shots are terrible against almost everything. But they won't make the shooting more effective, because that would require a modification to bows which won't happen. So they need a special rule.
I could really only make stuff up myself. A hit and run rule where they could jump into combat, attack, then jump out again would be great. But whatever they get, they need to be more deadly in some way. KB on shooting could be a simple solution.
Whirlwind - July 23, 2012 10:53 AM (GMT)
Very good stuff and valid points. I for one think KB would suit their ruthlessness nicely and in theme. And they also need to have two hand weapons so their melee punch increases a touch. Then the whole hatred vs strike first thing needs to be readdressed. Of course, if our army loses its strike first rule then it is problem sorted haha...
strewart - July 24, 2012 02:30 PM (GMT)
Good idea, two hand weapons and KB arrows would make Shadow Warriors worthy of their fluff and worthy of a place in army lists.
I'm on the fence about ASF. Sure its a big bandaid solution, but I am actually really enjoying the feel of the elf army with ASF, I think it works very well. Our army would suffer without it unless we got some big boosts elsewhere. We could well see it become standard ASF though, to stop every noble and prince rolling around with ASF great weapons...
Whirlwind - July 24, 2012 02:34 PM (GMT)
Yeah, also with the new rules I find striking first is not as powerful as it once was.
I wonder what our new large monster/war machine will be? lol...
strewart - July 25, 2012 10:05 AM (GMT)
Absolutely, ASF was a very powerful rule when we were able to charge in, wipe the first rank, and have no attacks coming back. Really not as strong now that they can still hit back with full strength. Of course still good and useful, but not as good.
We already have dragons as a large monster. There are rumours of units of dragon riders, possibly on mini (unwinged?) dragons, but of course that rumour has been floating around for years so I'd give it no more weight now than any other time. People on WS were also talking about a flying chariot of some description. I don't think much of the idea :P but we'll see.
Whirlwind - July 25, 2012 10:26 AM (GMT)
I see, I was hoping for a super sized bolt thrower. The fluff hints at the ones we use as smaller man portable ones and suggests port defences/larger ships etc have full-on artillery class bolt throwers. Imagine 60 inch range, str 8 d6 wounds :P
strewart - July 25, 2012 01:01 PM (GMT)
That would be cool, we could use another warmachine or two. We'll have to wait and see, WoC are first around October and sounding rather exciting! But there was info about them a long time ago, so hopefully more on the HE will come through soon.

So Waywatchers with an AHW inplace of the Strider rule? Fair swap I think and fits the background nicely
Whirlwind - July 26, 2012 09:49 AM (GMT)
And I also get hints that we will get a super dragon that makes the Star Dragon look second class!!!!
strewart - July 27, 2012 02:51 AM (GMT)
Really? Wow I hadn't heard that. I guess if we get another big kit (lol there isn't an if really I guess) dragons do suit High Elves best. GW seems to like using really big bases now, it would be interesting to see the pose they make for a dragon spread wide across a large base.
Whirlwind - July 27, 2012 05:24 PM (GMT)
Think of how tasty High Magic will become. We may have the magic phase other mages WISH they had haha.

http://z8.invisionfree.com/herdstone/index...showtopic=26411Look here for a picture of some of our new units.
I have also read a load of rumours about what we can expect to see. It looks really interesting and powerful.
