other information
appearance:

The looks in the family skipped right past Regulus. He's not ugly, but you can't really - in fact, you can't possibly - call him handsome. Short, dark hair that sticks up slightly in a rather comical and certainly not flattering way contrasts with extremely pale skin - likewise, his large eyes - a dark brown - look odd and out of place. He constantly has a shifty appearance, like he's lying to you; he probably is. He has thin lips that curve downwards ever so slightly, and wears a slight frown that's caused by the way his eyebrows are shaped, rather than by his mood. He has a rather narrow face; though it could just be his skinniness. He's no longer anorexic, but he was for a few months in his fourth year, and he still hasn't quite managed to regain the weight completely. He's short, which he rather hates. Not abnormally short; just about a head below the average height for his age. Generally, he looks rather weedy, a fact not helped by the way that he's constantly stumbling over the overlong robes he insists upon wearing, perhaps hoping that, if he wears them long enough, he surely must grow into them. He has an air of timidity about him that isn't common in Death Eaters.

personality:

Regulus is, to put it plainly, a cowards. He's scared, firstly and foremostly, about what people will think of him. While his elder brother is successful by retaining a complete confidence that everyone will love him - which, excluding his family, his ex-girlfriends, all the jealous boys that surround him, and pretty much all the Death Eaters, they do - Regulus is constantly worrying over what to do next, and how it will present him. Rather than talk cockily about how wonderful he is, to try and make himself seem interesting he'll invent some stupid story about something "funny" that happened to him at Flourish and Blotts' n the holidays. Usually, these stories aren't especially funny, and make people roll their eyes rather than laugh - at which point, Regulus will come up with something extra - making the story even crapper, naturally.

He's a compulsive liar. He finds himself lying for the hell of lying, to see if people will believe him; to make himself sound more interesting; and to get out of awkward positions, the classic, oh-no-we-had-homework, "dog ate it" situations. Though, of course, Regulus' lies are perfect, rather than far-fetched, being gritty enough to stink of the, ah, natural hardships and general crapnosity of life, without causing the teacher to burst into loud, pitying sobs.

He's also extremely shy. He dislikes approaching anyone he doesn't know, even, for example, someone working at the till in a shop - ask how much the trousers cost? No way. Can't someone else...? - and won't do it unless it's necessary. After all, he can't go around without any trousers on. Wouldn't be a pretty sight. He's also pretty quiet. Never trust the quiet ones, as someone says in some Agatha Christie novel.

Don't underestimate Regulus. He can be up with the slyest bastards when he feels it'll work to his advantage. He's cunning, and come out with some truly ingenious plans when he sets his mind to it, which he does fairly often. "Don't get mad - get even" - if that wasn't a 'chick flick' line, it's be Regulus' in an instant. He won't shriek or shout or plant Dungbombs in beds - he'll think up a way of seriously humiliating his victim. He's been trying to think of something awful enough for Sirius since halfway through his first year at Hogwarts, and still hasn't come up with anything quite suitable, though he has any number of ideas.

Regulus is quite intelligent, though his clumsiness poses a problem, and he's terrible at Potions and Transfiguration, knocking over his cauldron, whatever he's trying to transmogrify, and dropping his wand in either the smouldering mess or simply on the ground. He has a wonderful talent, however, at memorizing spells - making him brilliant in Charms. He's also, unusually for a student, very attentive in History of Magic - especially when they're discussing was, which are sources of extreme fascination for him. He spends most of his spare time - if not all - reading up on the Dark Arts. He could name practically every Dark wizard that's ever lived. He also looks up "interesting" curses - at least, that's what he tells the teachers to get them to sign the forum to let him in the Restricted section of the library - for his, err, research.

As a result of growing up a Black, he's very into how great being a pureblood is - he loathes "those dirty bloody Mudbloods that steal our jobs and places at our schools" with his entire heart; and yes, he does have a heart, otherwise he wouldn't be alive. Regulus doesn't forgive, rather like the master he's so in thrall to.

He thinks of himself, as is Black tradition, as "special", better than everyone else outside his family... the Death Eater status allows him to. He's one of those chosen by the Dark Lord - surely he must have some special talent, even if nobody else's realised it. One day, he firmly believes, he will have Sirius - he's very positive it's going to be Sirius - cowering at his feet. Apart from his parents, who adore him, nobody seems to think of him as anyone - and after being the cosseted favourite child at home, suddenly, in his first year, being simply a nobody at Hogwarts alarmed and upset him. He had to grow up quite a lot in a short while - and, having nobody else to copy, he mimicked the other Slytherins' behaviour.

Regulus isn't "evil". He's just a scared teenager clinging to the only hope of power he has - Lord Voldemort.

one word:
cowardly

likes and dislikes:
Likes; His parents. Purebloods. Most Slytherins. Darkness. The Dark Lord. Power. Revenge. Rain. Stars. Dark Arts. Revenge.

Dislikes; Mudbloods. Sirius. Pranks. Taunts. Fear. Exposure. Snakes.

strengths:

Undoubtedly, Regulus' biggest strength is his complete and utter determination. Once he's set his mind on something, he will never, never give up, even if it kills him - though this, as you'd imagine, it has the potential to be just as dangerous as helpful. In this way he's an extremely strong opponent, because there's no distracting him from his goal.

His next greatest strength would probably be his creativity, his cunning for plotting and scheming. It gets him out of so many corners, and he wouldn't be useful to the Dark Lord at all without it.

weaknesses:

Regulus cares, which is what is his worst problem. He cares what people think about him, and he's extremely paranoid about it. This is tied in with his desire for power. If he's powerful, people will, he reckons, respect him. They'll realise they were wrong about him. People will think he's brilliant, as they think his master is brilliant, no matter what side they're on. Even the Order can't deny that the Dark Lord is an extremely skilled and adept wizard. Regulus hopes that one day, he'll be the same.

He dreams of becoming the Dark Lord's right hand man; even, perhaps, the heir to his greatness. He will, one day, control Dark wizards over the world. He will be the most amazing wizard in the world, and nobody would dare to question it. No doubt his master knows he thinks these thoughts, but it doesn't make much difference. Dreaming something doesn't make it so, and Regulus is hardly a source of terror for the Dark Lord.

family history:

The Black family is an old, respected, pureblood family. Which, in their book at least, this means a lot. And they act their pretty little parts to perfection. One of the seven deadly sins is pride. This sin is so deeply embedded in the Black hearts that it's said that if one of their bodies is treated with disrespect after death, whichever one's body it is will come back from the dead and haunt the disrespectful and their family forever. To suggest, even for a minute, before Black ears, that they aren't the best, no matter what the context, is beyond treason. The Blacks do not walk away - they square their shoulders and yell Dark curses. They do not forgive - they hold a grudge for not only their own lifetime, but their children's, and their children's children's'. Grudges are handed down like heirlooms from one generation to the next. Oh, yes. The Blacks are proud, make no mistake. And it took Sirius to question what, exactly, the Blacks were proud of?

Sirius, of course, is Regulus' brother. Three years older than him. Regulus is prone to reflecting that Sirius would be a rather better model son than Regulus himself, should he be Dark. Sirius has - or at least, Regulus reckons he has - all the qualities a Black needs, however much he dislikes admitting it; he holds grudges;and he's proud, though of different things - what things? Regulus isn't quite sure. His good looks? His house? Though Sirius' pride - of course, it always comes back to the pride! - bars him from ever turning to the Dark side of the war, Regulus cannot help but feel that his parents would be rather more delighted at the news - actually, they wouldn't, as they'd have to swallow their pride to do it, but ignoring the pride for one second - than he'd prefer.

His parents are Orion Black and Walburga Black; his cousins Narcissa, Bellatrix and Andromeda. He has no siblings except Sirius, who might ask well not exist for all his parents mention him.

personal history:

Regulus' preteen life was rather clouded by Sirius; it was always new, terrible things that Sirius had done. Therefore his memories of that time are largely his mother talking about just how awful Sirius was. At school, it was pretty much the same - he had to endure endless numbers of teachers saying, "Oh? You're Sirius' brother?" and expecting him to live up to standards his brother had set, which Regulus thought quite unfair; they were standards of a confident, cocky Gryffindor, not standards of the shy, subdued Slytherin that they were actually addressing.

What Regulus was terrified for, in the three years after Sirius had been Sorted into Gryffindor and before his own Sorting, was that he'd end up in Gryffindor, he'd be another disgrace, and it would all be awful. A nightmare come true. But Regulus became a Slytherin... all was well.

It wasn't until Regulus' fifth year that he became aware that a good many of his peers were discussing "signing up". It wasn't until May that he discovered just what they were discussing signing up for. He was amazed, intrigued, shocked. The Dark Arts had always fascinated him, and yet he'd never really thought about becoming a Death Eater.

The Dark Lord is not stupid. Through his followers, he ensured that Regulus, and others like him, would have clear access to a way of joining the ranks of his followers. And, just after Regulus turned sixteen, before the school term he would not attend had begun, Regulus had ran away (not, of course, without a formal note to his parents, giving them the ability to support him until things got really bad - then, if they deemed it useful, they could claim they couldn't believe he'd done it, and were deeply ashamed of him and always had been. He had no intention of becoming another Sirius.) to become a Death Eater, to take that final step and create a bridge between the Blacks and Voldemort.
