The HeroEngine now has an Indie version for $4,995, 15% of your profits, plus thousands of dollars more for hosting and tech support and training.

Why is HeroEngine more expensive than (insert some other lame engine name here)?
We’re making HeroEngine available for more than 99% less than the previous price and you want a better deal?  Ouch!  OK, so first, HeroEngine is really a lot better than anything else out there.  It’s got the fastest art pipeline you’ve ever seen, it has a unique process for building games online in realtime so your time-to-market is less and your development cost should be a lot less – that’s where the real expense is, right? – and it includes a world-class server architecture built for large scale MMO games.  Also, we’re covering the cost of servers and network bandwidth – alright, you still need to buy internet access from your cable or phone company – so you don’t need to buy a rack of servers and spend time keeping them configured and running.  HeroCloud should save you a lot more than we’re charging.

I find it very unlikely the cost of servers and network bandwidth would be that much. You can get it far cheaper than this. Also, they won't be able to host a game on it anyway, they not going to let anyone sell a game until the end of this year.

They don't use any standard language like their competition does, but their own language, which will take more time to learn, and make it impossible to just copy over something from an open source library to speed things up.

They cost a hell of a lot more, take a bigger percentage of any profits that you make, and make you pay additional fees along the way.

If it was so easy to use, as they claim it is, why would you have to pay so much for training classes and tech support?

Update. LOL! The day after posting this, I convinced someone with a license to let me join their team. fighting50.gif Won't talk about the project right now of course, no reason to let others see our ideas and try to rip them off. You can never be too careful.

The NDA says we can't discuss the engine either.

If its any good, we'll have a game up and running in no time, and make enough money to pay for the cost with ease.

125 copies of a game sold for $40 each equals $5000. So we have to sell that many to cover the cost. Yeah, I think we can handle that without problems. So it'll be a good deal overall, provided it delivers on its promise of ease and simplicity.
