The first I've heard of it is when I checked out the recent demo posted in the Works in Progress forum.

So, what sort of speed hit do you take if your .exe is run through your browser? Any noticeable difference?

Would this work just as well or potentially better than Flash at making games for web browsers?

You don't run it in your browser.
It basically downloads the game, and runs it from the cache.

banghead.gif Doh!

Oh well.

Are there programs out there, hopefully freeware, that allow this to be done by others?

You'd be able to have them download additional levels in the background, while they were playing. And people are more likely to try a new independent game if they don't have to download and run anything. They won't know the difference between this and flash. Lie and say its Flash game you made, and see how totally impressed everyone else is. happy.gif
