After getting out of work early, it had been a slow day so he didn't have much to do around the restaurant, he had figured he might as well walk around town a little before going home. There had been many times he would do that and it was always very frustrating to have to go all the way home only to remember something he needed to do. But as he walked he couldn't really think of anything he really needed to do. He had enough food in his house to last a while and he couldn't remember anything essential that he needed. Of course, knowing his luck he would think of it on is way home or sometime tonight.

Since he had come from work he was still in his work clothes, nothing fancy thank god. He was never into formal clothes, he was just in a shirt with the restaurant name on the back, he had shoved his horrible name tag in the pocket of his black jeans. And since he had to look somewhat decent he had on semi-new black Vans that he had bought so he wouldn't be running around the restaurant in his ancient Converse that seemed to be hanging on to its last threads in order to stay in one piece. His hair was a bit messy, he had a terrible habit of running his hand through his hair, especially after being overwhelmed by work and trying to not be so shy around customers and such.

He continued to walk just in case he would find something that might trigger something in his head, reminding him to pick that up or what not. Wondering what to get, he couldn't really think of anything. But of course just as he walked past the bookstore he had that sudden impulse to go in and see what was there. Most of the time he took the ferry to Victoria and spent loads of money there on books and all that stuff, he had never really found too much here. But occasionally he would find something and since he had nothing else to do he might as well just spend some time here. He walked into the store and smiled over at the employee and then went over to the fiction section in search of nothing in particular. He knew there had been a few books that his friends had recommended but now that he was here he had no idea what they were. Oh well, he would just have to pick them up next time he was in Victoria.

Looking over the spines of the books, so far there was no title that seemed to remind him of something he was supposed to read. Occasionally he would pick up a book and read the back whenever something sounded interesting, and then place it back in its spot. Nothing so far, oh well he wasn't about to lose faith just yet. With a sigh he continued to look, somewhat hoping he'd find something amazing in here. It would make his day, that was a bit sad but it was true. Work hadn't been too eventful and after this he would go home, so at least if he found a book it would be something nice. Perhaps he should call up a friend or something and see what they were up to, that would make his day more eventful. Taking out his phone he checked the time, no they were probably still at work and whatnot. Guess he would just have to reserve his company with books for now.

Jane wandered aimlessly around the bookstore, hands in the back pockets of her jeans. Seeing as it was sort of the middle of the afternoon, not quite five yet, the place was almost empty except for a smattering of people who had gotten off of work early, as well as a single cashier. Jane didn't mind the bookstore, even if it was a bit understocked, and she was annoyed at the bored air around everyone in the small store. She attracted some stares, being new in town, but she didn't really mind, seeing as she never really cared what others thought of her. That fact was apparent from the casual clothes she was wearing: a black t-shirt with guitar graphics on it, faded, ripped jeans, and navy Converse sneakers. She wound a lock of her black-brown hair, which had no doubt fallen out of the messy bun she had hastily put up that morning, around her finger as she browsed absentmindedly among the shelves. She was looking for a good sci-fi or maybe a fantasy novel-- she could care less where it came from as long as it kept it occupied for a few hours.

She rounded a corner, and found someone browsing among the shelves. It was a guy, maybe her age, who she vaguely recognized at a waiter in a restaurant in town that she couldn't remember the name of at the moment. He seemed to be looking for something, and he had a bored air around him like the rest. She couldn't remember his name, only that she had been in the restaurant once before and he had been one of the few waiters there. She read the back of his shirt. Oh. So that was the name of the place. Not wanting to disturb him, she quietly walked up a few feet away, but in the same section. She always had been a bit awkward around boys, and this was no different, even though she didn't know the guy. Just a bad habit gleaned from being an outcast for most of her high school career. She browsed, her brushing some hair out of her brown eyes, looking for anything mildly interesting. She let her mind wander to the bored cashier, but she was still browsing, trying not to look to noticeable. She picked a book up from the shelf-- it was rather heavy-- and turned it over to see what was written on the back. But, just her luck, it slipped through her fingers and landed on the floor with a very audible thump. Rolling her eyes inwardly at herself, she hastened to lean down and pick it up.

Todd was never one to recognize anybody from work. He didn't know why, he always felt so bad if somebody knew him from his work but he had no idea who they were and yet he had been their waiter. But it was true, maybe it was just because he was working so hard on not being shy that he wasn't caring too much about anything else but keeping up that positve insanely nice attitude. And as long as that attitude kept him working than he was fine. He had to try really hard to keep it up all through his shift, he didn't like talking to people he didn't know and being all friendly and stuff. It just felt weird to him, but he knew he had to do it otherwise he wouldn't get a good tip and he'd be without a job.

Though as he glanced around the bookstore he couldn't help but notice something new. The girl not too far away from him, it was obvious that she was new here, Todd had sort of gotten an idea of who the locals were since some of them were regulars at his work. He wasn't incredibly new to the island but he knew enough people around here to have an idea of who had been here a while. Mainly by their faces and not really by talking to them, he was fairly shy outside of the restaurant but there were a few times where he managed to come out of his shell more. At the moment he was probably more likely to talk to people since he was still sort of in that overly friendly mindset from work.

But he kept his eye on the book, it was always weird trying to talk to somebody in a place like this that was somewhat small and quiet already. Well not too quiet, just as he was thinking about the silence there was the thud of the book against the floor. Instinctively his looked over to where the book had fallen and saw that it was the girl. But just as he moved to pick up the book for her, she did. Great, an awkward moment, just what he had been avoiding happened. He smiled slightly and said as he moved back so she could pick up the book,"Oh...sorry." Well if this didn't make him feel stupid he didn't know what did.

Jane smiled slightly as she scooped up the book. She was positive he was the waiter at that restaurant now-- it wasn't hard to forget who was who in a town this small. He seemed a bit awkward and shy, which was an exact mirror of what she felt. She brushed some black hair out of her eyes. It was a nervous habit of hers, and she was trying very hard to stop doing it. He apologized, but she shook her head. No use for unneccessary politeness. She appreciated that he didn't lean down to pick it up also, or her cheeks definintely would've gone bright red. She tended to avoid situations like that. A result of being overly embarrassed constantly.

"That's okay," she replied after he apologized. She felt the change in his mood: He was awkward and shy, but she could tell he normally was. He had a facade at work that made him seem friendly. But he was normally a closed-off person. She didn't need her mood-reading skills to see that. She had been around people like that most of her life, and she was very used to it. She smiled slightly at him, a little shy herself. She always felt awkward around new people.

"And yes, I'm new here, before you ask," she said, still smiling slightly. "People have been asking me that for the past couple of weeks now." She put the book carefully back on its shelf, so she wouldn't drop it again. No need to cause herself even more embarrassment. "Aren't you a waiter at that Madrona place?" Then, thinking she sounded a bit stalker-ish, she said hastily, "I saw it on the back of your t-shirt."

Well, way to go, Jane, you just totally messed that conversation up, a snide voice said in her head. She inwardly told it to shut up as she waited for him to answer. Then, thinking she had been a bit impolite, she said, "I'm Jane, by the way. Jane Loriin."

Todd was pretty easy to read when he was in a situation he hadn't expected himself to be in. But he wasn't too nervous right now, just sort of awkward. But the most he stood there the more he was adjusting to this. It hadn't been really embarrassing or anything like that, thank god. He just had some weird idea of first impressions and making them really good, which was very hard to do after some weird meeting like this one.

"Yeah I can imagine that question might get a little old after a while," he said with a smile, yeah had been there and had to deal with that too. It got quiet old but luckily he was quiet so most people didn't really notice him though eventually somebody would point him out and call him over and then he'd have to meet people and deal with all the usual questions when first people people. "That's cool. So do you like it here so far?" He asked, his more friendly attitude coming out, which surprised him. Normally he would never be this friendly to some random person he had just had some awkward meeting with. Well it wasn't that awkward, it could have been a lot worse than that, he didn't know how worse but still he was sure if he let his imagination go he would think of something worse. "Oh..um yeah I do. I just got off work." And with a small town like this he should have recognized her, but no that sort of made him feel bad. Really, this place was small he should know everyone on this island, he was supposed to be faking as if he cared about them at work, at least he should know everyone's name by now.

But he tried to assure himself that it would be impossible to know everyones name on the island. People came and went all the time, it would be silly and a very ridiculous task to memorize everyone's names and faces on the island. As she introduced herself, he was going to remember that, it wasn't one of those incredibly hard names to remember. "Nice to meet you Jane. I'm Todd, Todd Mitchell." Holding out his hand for her to shake, he was somewhat curious about this girl, maybe it was because he hadn't seen her before and she was new. He didn't know why for sure but oh well, he was sure to see her more often, this island was pretty small after all.

Jane chuckled slightly when he said that question 'might get a little old after a while.' So true, so true, she agreed in her head. "Yeah, it's nice here. A lot quieter than Olympia or Seattle, but I don't mind. I'm not a real 'big city' person. Frankly, crowds make me freak out," she said. The side of her mouth quirked up a bit into a half-smile. She felt a little awkward about not remembering his name, a feeling he seemed to have too, seeing as she could tell he felt a bit embarrassed, or maybe that was just the strange, random meeting. But she had never been good at names, much less names of waiters she normally only met once. She would have to get used to remembering faces and names around here-- a feat she hadn't had to accomplish in the 'big cities.'

She shook his hand when he held it out. Todd... Okay. She added that to her mental name list, and hoped she would remember his face. She would be eternally embarrassed if they ever talked again and she forgot his name, but maybe she was just sensitive that way. She normally didn't care what other people thought of her, but people she was actually talking to... Well, that was different. She soon let go of his hand, however, looking awkwardly around for another topic. She felt embarrassed and awkward, but said, "So, er, you like where you work?" She immediately felt embarrassed again for sounding so awkward. "I own that art shop down on the main road," she said, lest he should ask. She brushed some more hair out of her brown eyes, and felt a bit more relaxed. Once you got past the awkward parts, Jane could actually be very friendly.
