Good luck Dave & Val! Dave you need to take better care of yourself, your health has to come before the Koi! But who am I to tell you this, I do the same thing, always in pain & still chugging along, I spend more time with my arms in the pond than in my pool!

Well wouldn't you know it never ever ignore your own health when it comes to koi shows.
I did like a silly sod and ended up in hospital an hour after the show finished being pump full of morphine to kill the pain. What I thought was just a pulled or torn muscle/cracked rib, turned out to be a rather nasty chest infection but at the time the Ambulance arrived you could have been forgiven thinking it was a heart attack, bloody hell did it hurt. Up till then it had been a perfect day with no rain and plenty of sunshine ( which was bucking the odds as other places in the South West ended up flooded that day). Only this pain in my shoulder spoiled it and as the day progressed the pain started to spread, in the end I was in so much pain that as soon as the fish were bagged up at the end of the show I hit the road home to equalize the koi, Steve who lifts and shifts for us at shows headed back to pick up Val . By the time they got back I was in tears of pain it had spread across my back and round into the left side of my chest, move wrong at your own peril and I'd get bolts of pain causing me to bend almost double in agonies of pain. Steve decided that an ambulance needed to be called which irrived before we were even off the phone (amazing boys those paramedics). They in turn decided I need to be in hospital and off we set, all the staff and Doctors were brilliant and before I knew it I was pumped full of morphine to kill the pain. I'll never forget the name of the army doctor who attended to me as she has the same name as my cousn (first and second names). Dont some people deserve to be locked up we had this Dick Head a few beds down who had been arrested by the police, put it this way had the police gone away from this guy just for a minute or two I would have even in the state I was in gone down and showed him brutality thats all we got out of the drunken sod police brutality indeed lol. I have a new found respect for the Doctors and nurses as they had to put up with it sadly the more they tried to placate this idiot the more he played up thankfully in the end I was wheeled of to x-ray and by the time we got back he was gone to his own bed for the night ( cell's). Me I was discharged home early the next morning and have slept bolt upright on the sofa bcause it feel like a cant breath if I lie flat for the last two days. Thankfully the antibiotics are working and the infection I hope i clearing nicely ciggy wise I've gone from 15 a day to 3 and aim to quit as this brought back many scarey memories of childhood Astma. Show wise we took two firsts and two seconds had a number of wins on the tombola and a prize in the koi raffle of Nishikio multi sticks 540g . Not my best of days you must agree but it was despite all that befell me a really nice day. God really must be a koi keeper to give us sunshine where all around us people were being flooded out ( a thought for them please )........... rgrds Dave and Val -------------------- Weve been Keeping Koi now for 26 year's we have 20 Koi, 1 orfe , 6 newts, a rescue female cat aged 4 called Suki (four white socks white running from chin to chest, white streak down belly the, body being black, have a russian blue type cat with while leg markings white chin etc and the cutest young boy cat, Jet black in colour (who has two tails)

Wow, what a day! Like me, you seem to push yourself for your animals and fish and often at the expense of your own health. Hopefully, you can now take time to recover. I'm off to the hospital again tomorrow for another transfusion for my mother. We are all just spending too much time there!

Many thanx Robyn I seem to do it all to much dont I but when it comes to Val the pets and koi you are right and sod my own health .
At the moment I'm a little worried weve had that much rain here that my water is getting murky and one of the koi is looking a little stressed (noticed at the show before he was benched possibly areomonas infection trouble is I cant stop the rain and I can only keep the the filtration clean as best we can so that all the readings are normal . I cant get out there at the moment to treat the pond this time salt is going to be used but at a level that will make you balk (15kg) on the orders of our health officer . Sorry to hear about your Mum continuing problems and we are thinking of you all rgrds Dave and Val -------------------- Weve been Keeping Koi now for 26 year's we have 20 Koi, 1 orfe , 6 newts, a rescue female cat aged 4 called Suki (four white socks white running from chin to chest, white streak down belly the, body being black, have a russian blue type cat with while leg markings white chin etc and the cutest young boy cat, Jet black in colour (who has two tails)

Bought my first ever quiting cigerette today wheee are they strong I've been manic all day but I think after a day or two I'll be calming down some lol .
Got the pond to salt tomorrow I just wish the weather would buck up and stop raining. The treatment is as I've said got the salt today ( the only way we can measure it at the moment is buy it from the supermarket) . that and malachite green will be the man treatment for the next two weeks or so fingers crossed everything settles with the weather which as I've said is upsetting more than one pond in our club rgrds Dave and Val -------------------- Weve been Keeping Koi now for 26 year's we have 20 Koi, 1 orfe , 6 newts, a rescue female cat aged 4 called Suki (four white socks white running from chin to chest, white streak down belly the, body being black, have a russian blue type cat with while leg markings white chin etc and the cutest young boy cat, Jet black in colour (who has two tails)

Why did you add malachite green? I thought that you already treated for the ick?
Good luck with quitting smoking. I had a friend who tried and tried so I know how hard it is. If you can get through it though, it's one of the best things that you can do for your health. -------------------- Robyn, Former Analytical Chemist, Zone 6/7, Maryland

Treated for ich yes Robyn but its the constant rain that we are getting that is now causing our koi problems.
Our health official has indicated we treat this way and we are not the only ones with problems in our club it's the constant downpouring of rain that is being held to blame weve only had one clear day in weeks now . There is a joke going round the UK now that says when it rained for 40 days and 40 nights Noah built an Ark . Here we Brits call that an English summer lol, it just doesnt stop coming down from the sky even the drought of only two months ago is over with and those nearly empty Aquafers full ( impossible but true ) we had one village in Devon had a whole months rain hit it in one day the same story is repeated throughout the UK. The koi cannot adapt to th amount of water washing into their home from the sky and rainwater isn't that kind on fish at the best of times, so what the health officer says goes as I've already said we arent the only ones having problems . You've said it yourself we koi keepers keep our koi in an artificial way over normal pond keepers and are paying the price for this. Weve had a spinning mobile outside throughout the summer its now covered in Moss which has never happened before and its been outside on and off for two whole years now . The farmers crops are that water logged that they are just rotting in the fields rgrds Dave and Val -------------------- Weve been Keeping Koi now for 26 year's we have 20 Koi, 1 orfe , 6 newts, a rescue female cat aged 4 called Suki (four white socks white running from chin to chest, white streak down belly the, body being black, have a russian blue type cat with while leg markings white chin etc and the cutest young boy cat, Jet black in colour (who has two tails)

Yeah, all your rain has made the national news here in the US. A lot of the US is in severe drought but we're ok. The corn here is looking great.
Is there no way that you could erect some kind of umbrella or tarp over part of your pond at least to divert some rain water away? Rain = nature's water changes just not the pH and hardness that you want! -------------------- Robyn, Former Analytical Chemist, Zone 6/7, Maryland

Wow Dave,
Sorry to hear about your health troubles. Hope everything is settling down for you. You had an infection? I've never had trouble with the rain. I guess it's because we get so little of it of late. Take care of yourselves...... |
