Nice aquarium (I'd be terrified if I were that diver though!)
But, after a while I started to think - shouldn't huge fish like whale sharks be in the wild? It just doesn't seem right to have them in such a small area, even if those ones are juveniles.

Hi Jayesh
I'm totally in agreement in what you say on this matter as I'm no great fan of Aquariums in fact everytime we have visited our local aquarium we have found we end up looking for all that is wrong with the captive fish. sad.gif
Weve seen Salmon that were deformed sad.gif , trout with finrot sad.gif , a mullet minus its lower jaw ohmy.gif . plus many other problems. sad.gif
But you have to admit for the shreer size of this one it is impressive. wink.gif

I know what you mean. Hubby was a Naval Aviator and being out there in the vast abyss, at night, in the dark , trying to find that postage size carrier to land on is pretty scary. He lost one engine on a catapult take off once and you only have 50 feet from the deck till you hit the water. You being on ships can appreciate that. Once when he was on duty at the tower, he gave one of his squadron mate the order to punch out because he couldn't land and was running out of fuel.

There was a discussion on one of the forums I go on other than here about this tank, so I'll just copy and paste:

I honestly hate this tank. It's hugely overstocked and way too small for the amount of whale sharks in there. This aquarium has had several deaths of sharks while trying to house whale sharks and it is clear this place only cares about one thing - money. It is also morally wrong to even atttempt housing these planktonivores that are close to extinction in a tiny little tank like this (especially having deaths while doing so) - these fish travel miles every day in the wild - and in aquaria they are doomed to constantly swim around something minute in comparison for hours on end - which is already stuffed with an array of smaller species.

Many people including the editor in chief of PFK have agreed with me on this on the other forum.

Hi Mr cichlid
Arent most aquariums in it for what they can get ? the one here in Plymouth had it's own share of deaths transporting sharks via plane when they were left out on the runway in Amsterdam allowing the temperature to fall between flights.
They have since had further deaths when a vital peice of equipment failed, now they want to transfer other fish from Barbados (including flying fish and sharks at a cost of £500.00).
We stopped going as for one the fish in there were not top dollar health wise , the admission price sky rocketed and the fish they are importing have nothing to do with our own waters here around the UK.

Ideally, no wild animals would be kept in captivity. I agree with what Mr. Cichlid said. Whale sharks especially just don't belong in captivity. The Georgia Aquarium also has some. Even though they're still babies, already some have died. Marine biologists are still figuring out their captive care requirements. Still, it's an amazing thing to see large fish in an aquarium so we're willing to pay. I would go if I were close enough.
