Welcome to the forum!

It sounds like you found a fish louse that fell off the fish. Did it look like this?

Hi rachel*gonefishing
First let us welcome you to the forum from here in the UK.
What you have in the photo is non other than the Argulus or fish louse which is a miss ideantification as they are a form of crustacean really.
This is what I know about them!!!!.....
When they attach to a fish they release a toxin which can kill a smaller fish and cause larger fish to act irratically both male and female argulus tend to attach themselves to the host fish and they will then make babies.
To remove them we have to use a sterilized pair of tweazers and treat the wound with propolis which is available in any local health store.
We now have to deal with any juvanilles that will no doubt be in the pond.
For this we would need an organophosphate based medication , repeatinng this treatment 2 to 3 times at ten day intervals.
This repated treatment ensures that all juvanille argulus are removed and the life cycle will then be stopped.
So as you can see they are nasty really nasty.

Dave, it sounds like Rachel found the louse on a wild caught fish and does not have a personal pond so it's not in her pond. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Robyn
So sorry Robyn it seems that I misread the post, I have to put it down to my morphine prescription and other medication which I had taken about an hour before, (as such you tend to suffer an altered reality for a few hours after taking them ).
As such I have altered the post so that it is a lesson for any fish keeper in what to do should they ever find them in their pond.
I hope this meets with your approval :)
