Poor SPIKE is a Pleco. He almost died when temperatures went below 35 for a few days. He is a 6 year old Pleco living with goldfish and KOI. The goldfish and KOI are OK and 2 younger Plecos died!
I saved SPIKE's life by putting him in my Jacuzzi and adding a heater.
Then I then took him to his pond when the temperatures were over 60 because he wouldn't eat anything in the Jacuzzi. Before that I bought everything every site told me would make that Pleco chomp up the food. WRONG!!!
When the temperatures were over 70 degrees one day ago Spike came out of his tunnel and started eating things he likes. He has tunnels he stays in until he wants to come out of when it is warm enough.
Last night the temperatures went to 32-35 F in Florida. The pond, however, is 64 degrees and that means Spike is alive but I won't see him until the outside temperature is over 70.
Maybe Tomorrow I will again see Spike?
Next year I will have a heater for the pond.
I hope Spike is happy soon when things warm up!
B) Thank you Robin.
We're keeping his pond warm by shutting down the larger waterfall and
covering the pond with a "Frost Blanket" I purchased a 12' x 500' frost blanket which I also use for plants. I have a large yard and many plants. The frost blanket really works.
Last night it was 32 degrees (in Florida?). The pond stayed at 59 degrees.
Hopefully this nightmare weather is going to end soon. I will send a picture of Spike when he comes out of his tunnels.
