Title: Tads To Toads?
Route3drummer - July 16, 2009 12:52 AM (GMT)
So I had put some tadpoles in my pond....they are gone, but I found this little guy, about the size of my thumbnail, making a break through the grass heading away from the pond. I put him back in the water and ran to get my camera. Toad not frog?

Hi Derrick, that looks like it could be a leopard frog, I'm not sure, because I can't see the skin very well, is it bumpy & brown, or smooth? Toads have bumps on their skin, this little one has striping, like a leopard frog, I'm sure someone will give you the right answer. Do you just have one?

I have only seen the one, and he was so tiny.....I think he was smooth, but maybe toads that size are smooth? No idea really....LOL

Toadlets don't stay in the water once they've given up the aquatic life. Fowler's toadlets leave the pond when they're the size of my little finger nail and hang out in dry overgrown weedy places. When giving my parsley bed a thorough and badly needed weeding yesterday morning I found at least 5 toadlets. There were any number of other weedy overgrown places in my yard for them just a hop or two away.

Yep, it's a wood frog. They're not aquatic so he probably just came for some water to drink. In late winter, they spawn in ponds, normally vernal ponds or ones without fish.

Well at least you've got frogs visiting your pond. Are you sure that is not one of the tadpoles that you caught? And could the others be hiding in all that hornwort?
Things sure do grow well in your neck of the woods. How many hours of daylight do you get?
