LOS ANGELES – A sequel to Nickelodeon's "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is in the works.

The channel said Wednesday the new animated TV series will premiere in 2011. It has the working title, "The Legend of Korra."

Nickelodeon says the series will build on the "mythology" of the original "The Last Airbender" series, which inspired this summer's live-action movie from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan (SHAH-muh-lahn).

The "Legend of Korra" is from the creator-producers of "Avatar: The Last Airbender."

Nickelodeon executive Brown Johnson says the new series will focus on a teenage girl avatar named Korra. Brown describes her as hotheaded, independent and "ready to take on the world."

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" has ranked among the highest-rate series on the Nickelodeon and Nicktoons channels.

QUOTE
Nickelodeon said in a release that “The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra.”

Korra’s quest eventually leads her to Republic City–the epicenter of the world of “Avatar.” A metropolis powered by steampunk-type technology, the city is inhabited by people from all nations. Korra finds that Republic City suffers from rampant crime and is also dealing with an anti-bender revolt. Korra is tutored by Aang’s son, Tenzin, is the ways of airbending.

Really, if you live in America, it's as easy as having a Netflix account. The whole series is on Instant Queue.

Fun fact, steampunk technology in a futuristic world was the original plan for Avatar's setting, til they decided to make it fantasy at some point.

There were some elements of steampunk in the original series, I suppose. The Fire Nation's war machines were great clanking iron things, belching smoke (often with boilers fired by firebenders, no less), in particular the giant drill they used to breach Ba Sing Se was filled with gears and steam pipes, I believe.

Indeed there were. It'll be interesting to see what history we'll get and see what happened to all the cast from the original.

Sokka teamed up with a brash, arrogant rookie, fresh from the Earthbending academy. They're getting their own spin-off buddy cop series where they hate each other at first, but then come to like each other. You know, because there's plenty of other ways buddy-cop films turn out.

That would be hilarious.

Given that there's a new Avatar we can probably guess Aang has passed away from old age, and if the prophecy from the show is right he and Katara had tons of kids so it might be interesting to see how that goes.

That would be awesome. Almost as awesome as the concept for Double K. (Kamina and Kittan from Gurren Lagaan as buddy cops)

--- She was conceived to be more rugged than Aang.

--- The musical concept is "if the Chinese invented Jazz."

--- Korra's Animal Companion is a female Polar Bear Dog named Naga.

--- The New Team Avatar will be a trio: Korra and two brothers named Mako and Bolin.

---Mako and Bolin are brothers, both benders, but of different disciplines.

--- Mako is a Firebender, and the brooding type.

--- Mako is named after the Mako.

--- Bolin is the younger brother, a goofy Earthbender.

--- Mako's animal companion is named Paboo/Pabu.

--- Paboo/Pabu is a Fire Ferret, a hybrid of red panda and ferret.

---Republic City is now "United Republic."

--- UR was founded by Aang and Zuko.

--- UR is meant to be a multi-bender utopia.

--- UR is based on 1920's Shanghai.

--- Aang found a herd of Sky Bison after the war.

--- There are new species of Flying Lemur.

--- Toph travelled the World, teaching metalbending.

--- Ty Lee's Chi blocking style has spread.

--- Aang and Katara had three kids.

--- Tenzin is the youngest.

--- Tenzin had three children with a non-bender named Pema.

--- Jinora, the studious one. Iki, the fun and crazy one. Meelo, the young goofy one.

--- Tenzin looks like a total badass and he's serious as fuck, but can be funny.

--- Toph's Daughter is the chief of police.

--- The police are metalbenders and they zipline around the city.

--- The anti-bending group are called The Equalists.

--- They fight using Ty Lee chi blocking technique.

--- They are led by a masked man named Oman.

--- There will be two seasons.

--- Season 1 will be 12 episodes , 2eason 2 14 episodes.

--- Lauren Montgomery and Josh Middleton will be on board for Season 2.

--- Kisu will be undertaking his normal role for Korra.

--- There is an arena sport called Pro Bending.
