Title: Thread for games without their own thread.

Exu - April 20, 2010 08:19 AM (GMT)
Didn't see a thread for just general chat about games so I thought I'd make one.
So yeah, comment on what you're playing or on new games not worth making a new thread over.

Suddenly, Bionic Commando Rearmed 2!

Jeffk38uk - April 20, 2010 02:16 PM (GMT)
It's kind of ironic that the arcade hd remake of the classic bionic commando did farrrr better than the third person remake that did poorly.

Exu - April 22, 2010 02:07 PM (GMT)
That's because the arcade game was awesome and the retail disc was crap :P

Jeffk38uk - April 22, 2010 04:22 PM (GMT)
Gameplay it was ok, but the plot was boring, the character unlikeable and the controls still feel fiddly even after you figure everything out.

That and apparently you find out your arm has your dead wifes soul.

Exu - April 22, 2010 11:45 PM (GMT)
On the plus side it did have Mike Patton saying "fuck" a lot.

LGHunter - April 23, 2010 12:53 AM (GMT)
Note to the wise:

Do not pick up "Glory of Heracles" as it is shit.

Horrifically bad story, far too easy, unsatisfying ending... Ugh. That was thirty hours of my life I won't be getting back.

Dakatsu - May 1, 2010 04:20 AM (GMT)
So it seems I found the game I really wanted to play again. It's called Shivers. It's been a long while since I played this game. I must say, it's absolutely amazing. I love the story behind the museum and what happened to it. Hahahaha those crazy Ixupi.

HunteRS - May 5, 2010 04:51 PM (GMT)
Gears 3-out next year but damn I want it now. Kotaku has some Russian magazine shots of the new look characters and the....things they and the Locust are fighting. Looking forward to it but hope the Lambent are Gears Flood.

Jeffk38uk - May 5, 2010 05:24 PM (GMT)
Just saw a quick look of Alan Wake on Giant Bomb, man the lighting in that game is amazing, and very cinematic. Does what that Alone in the Dark reboot should have done in the first place.

which makes me more annoyed MS canclled the PC version. >:[

Jeff, that's clearly because PCs can never be as powerful as the consoles, and the developers knew this, they just couldn't scale the game down to cope with such ancient architecture.

Feldoon - May 5, 2010 07:07 PM (GMT)
That's true.

I wish I could afford those new nvidia 7800s. I can dream.

The announcement of a so-called new X-COM game that happens to be a first person shooter which so far has absolutely no connection to one of the most praised games of all time fills me with sheer rage.

You might want to read PC Gamer UK's exclusive preview then, as the basic setup is quite similar to classic X-Com despite in first person. You always have 2 wingmen, you can go off in random missions from your central base and you can upgrade your weaponry and equipment.

the flood levels were my fave, especially the first one on h3 where they are jumping around in the fog around you before you really see one. loved how it actually showed infection in that one.

...2 wingmen. As opposed to a 12 man squad with tank backup that you controlled isometrically, after downing UFOs with jets you dispatch after them and collecting carefully managed resources.

This is like saying that one FPS game Yahtzee reviewed that had time travelling is an accurate remake of Civilisation.

I have recently been playing and replaying the PS3 demo for Conan.

It borrows heavily from God of War, but has a bit of flavour of its own.
For a start, it's really, really satisfying. Heads and arms and legs come off all the time, and I don't mean like in GoW. I mean when you hit someone to death, the bit of them you hit flies off, and all the dead wusses ragdollise everywhere like wankers.

Decapitating piledriver? Yes please, because it gives health when you do it. Also, the punch move is called "Camel Punch," which, for anyone who never saw the Schwarzeneger classic, is because of this best moment in a film ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7tOWoDVQLU

Raarrr! I am Conan, voiced by Ron Perlman! Watch me throw these boxes at the baddies! Rarr!

I am so getting this game at some point.

It is a bit of a low number. Considering Freedom Fighters allowed you to control 12 men/women to liberate the US, and to some extent Kane & Lynch.

Still, I have a more open minded view of this remake so I'll judge when I see it in action.

Don't forget, there was alot of hate when Fallout 3 went FPS, and look where that went.

DanThe57 - May 8, 2010 04:00 AM (GMT)
meaning that blind hate has the same accuracy as flipping a coin!

Sabre_Justice - May 8, 2010 09:48 AM (GMT)
It's not blind hate. From the information we've seen, the game has literally nothing to do with X-COM beyond the name.

And there's already been an X-COM shooter. It was dogshit. The gameplay of the X-COM games does not translate at all to a FPS. It's like trying to turn Transport Tycoon into a platformer.

DanThe57 - May 8, 2010 11:29 AM (GMT)
still sounds like flipping a coin

Captain Wonderful - May 8, 2010 01:22 PM (GMT)
No it doesn't.
You might disagree, but these are clearly points which have received thought.
Your argument is completely ignoring all relevant information, and so's your face.

So I finally got Super Street Fighter IV, stupid Zavvi not delivering until after I'd gone on holiday. D:

Juri's pretty sweet though I can't believe they made Seth an even bigger cock than before.

onFyre - May 8, 2010 07:34 PM (GMT)
I picked up the new Sin & Punishment today. Well, I say picked up - I had to look through 3 shops. Anyway, a bit of backstory: the first S&P came out on the N64, and didn't get released outside Japan until the Virtual Console on the Wii. That sold well, so Treasure finally got to make a sequel.

It's basically a massive nostalgia trip. Firstly, it's an old-style shooter, not on-rails like House of the Dead or Dead Space: Extraction but more like Starfox back when it was good. It's got a traditional difficulty level too, which is nice in an age of party games and fitness aids. It's good-looking for a Wii game, except for the player characters for some reason. But enough gushing, I doubt it will be popular enough for Nintendo to shake their kiddy image. But that's why we have No More Heroes 2 out next month. It's a good year to be a nintendo fan.

Sabre_Justice - May 9, 2010 02:42 AM (GMT)
Damn, I might have to try Sin and Punishment now. Being a Star Fox fan is almost as painful as being a Sonic or X-COM fan.

Yeah, Starfox Adventures.

(Note: I actually liked that game even if it was a shit Zelda.)

I bought it again recently for 99p in Gamestation because I remember liking it. While I don't remember it being challenging, I remember it being nice for combat, well-paced, and YOU PAAAAAY, THIS MUCH

Still not played Assault or any game that came after that, though.

DanThe57 - May 9, 2010 11:00 PM (GMT)
Little big planet 2 announced, more details on Monday.

What HAS been revealed.

Not necessarily a platformer. the new level designer allows people to create new game types. Platformers, racers, RPGs. A Media Molecule employee even re created command and conquer!

Jeffk38uk - May 9, 2010 11:01 PM (GMT)
Nice details to fans, but the bigger question remains. Is there more Stephen Fry?

DanThe57 - May 9, 2010 11:05 PM (GMT)
I believe Stephen accidentally leaked LBP2 when he tweeted about doing voice work for it months ago.

So I think so.

Red Dead Redemption.

Sweet mary mother of fuck this game is awesome. It bleeds atmosphere, from the setting to the soundtrack to the random encounters. This is the Western game I've always wanted to play.

While playing multiplayer free roam with some friends, a couple of pubbies kept harassing us. So, one time while out in the wilderness, I see the pubbies on their horses looking the other way on a hill in the distance. From my vantage point, I see that a cougar is stalking the two of them without them noticing. So I took my Winchester, put two bullets in the rump of the horse, it bucks the guy off and the cougar pounces and mauls the guy while his friend runs off.

Think GTA4 in the Wild West, but better and no friends calling you incessantly to go see BEEG AMERICAN TEEEETTEEEEES!

Seriously, it's the good shit.

Jeffk38uk - May 19, 2010 06:58 PM (GMT)
Shame its console only atm. Altho Rockstar has for the most part ported their titles 6 months after onto PC....hopefully.

Exu - May 19, 2010 11:57 PM (GMT)
My little brother's GOTY of LBP arrived today, I had a go and think it's boring as fuck but each to their own. The content you get with it is a joke too.

Master Shake - May 21, 2010 08:02 AM (GMT)
Back to RDR:

I just completed a 'help the marshal get his escaped prisoners back' side mission in the BEST WAY.

First guy, I never left my horse. I rode over to him, lassoed him and drug his ass back to the marshal who shoots the guy as soon as he's in range.

Second guy is a little bit farther off, but I catch up to him and lasso him. As I start on my way back with the bad guy 10 feet behind me, I hear the familiar sound of wolves barking and sure enough, three come over the ridge at me... and then past me. And then my lasso goes slack, the red dot that is the prisoner disappears and the marshal is thanking me for helping out. And I look back and see the wolves pouncing around where the prisoner would've been.

Have I mentioned that I love this game? Because I fucking love this game.

DanThe57 - May 26, 2010 10:13 PM (GMT)
Alert achievement hounds, HL2 has been given achievements, get cracking!

oh and steam cloud features as well.

Jeffk38uk - May 26, 2010 10:15 PM (GMT)
And apparently some graphical additions.

Jeffk38uk - May 28, 2010 06:57 AM (GMT)
Alpha Protocol was released, tried the first few hours. People are right to compare this to Mass Effect as it has the same conversation system, but timed meaning you have to choose right there and then, and what you say changes your respect between each character that can change the outcome. Graphics aren't anything special. Your class you choose at the start of the game that decides your stat selection, tho you can then tweak it to your choice.

I chose tech specialist, but changed my weapon skills from shotguns to pistols and assault rifles. Heavy customisation on your choice of weapons, its attachments, your armour and extras, your gadgets, and even intel you can buy that can help you in the various missions that you select.

I assumed this played exactly like a shooter, but as it turns out, its shooter except in damage. Doing a headshot for example only does nominal damage to their overall health, which is kinda annoying as you expect a headshot to kill no matter what weapon you use. Kinda makes adding a silencer to my pistol a little redundant if it requires several shots to kill a dude, by which then he would have already called his other mates and sounded the alarm.

Will play more but to sum up, heavy customisation on loadout (except your character), nice twist on the ME conversation system, Fairly deep RPG system in place, combat functional.

Line up a critical, or Chain Shot hits to the head kill.

Seriously, on my 4th playthrough and just found Chain Shot, it's so overpowered I got through the Embassy without being spotted, with no stealth skill...

LGHunter - May 31, 2010 12:52 PM (GMT)
As Virus can attest, I have labelled this as crack in it's digital form.

I can't put it down, even though I don't get the logic or the math of it.

I guess a lot.

And restart constantly.

The blocks and numbers have been burned into my eyes, so that I see them when my eyes are closed.

I think I need help.
