Username: TentekiCharacter Number: 1
Name: H'tosk (Hetoskan)
Age: 29
Gender: Male
Appearance: Standing at an unintimidating five and a half feet, H'tosk has only recently grown out of being thin almost to the point of appearing unhealthy. He possessed an extremely fast metabolism during his teenage years which slowed down Turns ago, but his more-recent injury, subsequent recuperation, and decrease in activity left him with little to no appetite for over a Turn. He'll never look like a bodybuilder, but his appealingly thin frame is covered with wiry muscle from the physical aspect of dragonriding, giving him a much healthier look than such a lack of body mass might imply. Still, he is rather bony and as a result he has trouble with retaining body heat in colder temperatures. H'tosk rarely goes outside during the winter without making sure he is appropriately attired, and much prefers living in areas further south of the High Reaches, where he grew up. He is missing his right arm at about five inches below the shoulder, a memento of battle with their ancient airborne enemy.
Like most Pernese, H'tosk is of darker stock. His wavy black hair is typically kept at about shoulder length in a tail because trimming it any shorter yields particularly chaotic results. His eyes are brown, framed by sharp cheekbones and thin eyebrows, and his skin sports a perpetual tan even in the dead of winter. He has a very expressive face, which often betrays his feelings to the world despite his wishes. Around the same time he began filling out, H'tosk's previously-smooth face began sprouting facial hair at a phenomenal rate. He needs to shave every couple of days or he begins to look truly scruffy, which he hates.
He tends to wear plain clothes, primarily browns, black, or darker shades of other colors, with the right arm of his shirts typically knotted to keep the empty cloth from blowing distractingly in the breeze. Since his metabolism began to slow, H'tosk has taken great pleasure in the knowledge that his clothing no longer hangs off of his gawky form. It all fits rather nicely now, in fact, drawing interested looks from both sexes. He wears no jewelry, as he finds the weight and feel of it distracting. He does, however, have an obsession with belts and belt buckles, and has various caches of them tucked away in the trunks that he keeps his clothes in. Choosing a belt for the day takes him longer than the entire rest of the dressing process, which tends to exasperate anyone who needs to wait for him to make a decision.
Personality: One of the most notable things about H'tosk's personality is that he can't stand a mess. If he sees anything in his living area out of place, he simply has to fix it before he can move on and do anything else. While it is possible for him to withstand the urge to clean up if he has to, the knowledge that there's a mess and he's done nothing about it puts him on edge and makes him twitchy and distracted. Only when he's certain the problem has been fixed can he relax, to the point that he actually walks around and cleans other peoples' homes sometimes when he's invited over.
Aside from the cleaning issue, however, H'tosk is fairly laid-back. He is something of a tease when he wants to be and often speaks to people without much apparent respect for status. He has the tendency to rub stiff and highly responsible people the wrong way, and in his youth he drew punishment duty more than once simply because of his "attitude". Still, his tendency to smile a lot and be generally friendly even to people he doesn't know has gotten him
out of more trouble than it's gotten him
into. With age has come greater wisdom and stability, and acquiring the position of wingsecond temporarily before his injury did wonders for his sense of responsibility.
H'tosk is, for lack of a better word,
loose about relationships. His difficulties with the riders F'lan and T'kal over the course of his early life as a dragonrider have made his romantic sensabilities something of a mess. Still, his relationship with T'kal was steady enough for the two to become weyrmates, and H'tosk had a very large amount of both respect and fondness for the other young man. Their falling out was painful and emotionally debilitating for the greenrider, and he has yet to get completely over the painful upset. H'tosk is not the type who will flirt with absolutely everyone and sleep with anyone he likes when he has a steady lover; he may be "loose" when it comes to relationships, but he's very loyal to anyone he feels he has a commitment to.
Most recently, H'tosk has found himself involved with L'sean, a much younger bluerider who he met in Ista Weyr during his recuperation. While H'tosk is extremely fond of the other rider, he has grown very wary of committed relationships, so the two are more "friends with benefits" than anything else...though H'tosk hasn't really gone out of his way to find other partners, either.
Biography: Born into weyrlife, H'tosk's High Reaches greenrider mother actually wanted to make an attempt at raising him. After only a couple of months, however, she came to the conclusion that she would never be a very good mother and fostered him off to a friend. H'tosk grew up thinking of his mother as a favorite aunt, and she came to visit him every sevenday. She always brought him something to eat or play with, and when he got older, she was there for him with good advice and an open ear.
As he grew, H'tosk--like most boys born in the Weyr--held dreams of standing on the Hatching Grounds and Impressing a dragon just like his parents. He came of age, however, and though he was allowed to Stand by nature of being born to the Weyr, no dragon picked him. Four Turns and over a dozen Hatchings later, he was ready to give up, believing that if no dragonet had looked his way for that long, none ever would. His hopes crushed, he began to look for alternate routes for his life to take. Though his mother was none too pleased by the fact that her son was giving up, she gave him her blessing and sent him to High Reaches Hold to see what he could do with his life.
Fate being what it is, H'tosk spent the next three Turns in the Hold, only to be picked up by a green dragon on Search for Evergen Weyr. Eager to have another chance at his dream, H'tosk didn't even consider passing up the offer. He arrived at the Weyr only two days before the Hatching and, much to his shock, Impressed green Gwyllioth. Soon after his Impression, H'tosk broke the rule about romantic relationships when he slept with weyrling F'lan during another green's mating flight. Thankfully neither young dragon awoke, but the damage was done when H'tosk realized he was very interested in the other man.
The hole was dug deeper when a massive cave-in brought down part of the Evergen weyrling barracks, trapping H'tosk inside with a concussion. It was T'kal and Wiyuth who found H'tosk and Gwyllioth and helped them to safety. H'tosk was in shock, and (to his later surprise), F'lan stayed with him and helped pull his friend back together. H'tosk realized that he was in love with F'lan, and then fate stepped in. A queen flight resulted in T'kal sharing H'tosk's bed. F'lan found them and, in a fit of jealousy, went
between with Kraketh without training. The pair went back in time three Turns and reappeared at Evergen a month later. By that time, however, H'tosk and T'kal were cemented into a relationship, and H'tosk refused to leave his lover for his friend.
Despite this, F'lan gave H'tosk the gift he'd gotten for him anyway: a fire lizard egg from Ista. Days later it hatched, and (much to his surprise) H'tosk impressed a little gold. Almost immediately thereafter, Gwyllioth rose to mate for the first time and afterward, H'tosk began to spend even more time with T'kal. F'lan was spending time with T'kal's sister Kaedryn, after all, so he thought that perhaps giving up on the former sailor would be best for all of them.
Then, in what he refers to as a fit of supreme stupidity, H'tosk not only got drunk and slept with F'lan; he felt compelled to tell T'kal the truth. Angry and hurt, T'kal began pulling away from his weyrmate and in the end, the two decided to go their separate ways. H'tosk went to High Reaches, where he proceeded to spend time allowing himself to come to terms with both his mistake and the fallout. Gwyllioth's emotional state had been rocky at best for a very long time, preventing her from rising to mate again. High Reaches was good for both of them, and with the change in scenery Gwyllioth rose to mate at a phenomenal rate, as though making up for lost time. H'tosk allowed himself to sink into a comfortable cycle, sleeping with whoever caught his fancy and not allowing himself to form any kind of permanent attachment with the men he took to his bed.
In the end, it was not H'tosk who decided to go back to Evergen, nor was it F'lan, who had become Weyrleader. While ascending a flight of stairs, H'tosk hit an icy patch and fell, breaking his left arm, spraining his right ankle, and suffering large-scale bruising. The healers decided that it would be best for him to return to Evergen, where he had friends (and family, since his mother had recently transferred there) and so he did. H'tosk healed quickly, and during his recuperation he befriended V'ryx, rider of blue Tiberth. Although Gwyllioth did not much like the blue, H'tosk took an immediate shine to V'ryx, and the two become lovers...but not weyrmates. H'tosk was still too shy of commitment to attempt anything that smacked too much of permanence.
Then, when he was twenty-five Turns old, H'tosk and Gwyllioth were caught by a huge tangle of Thread during a Fall that took place in high winds. Both H'tosk and Gwyllioth, as well as H'tosk's gold Firi, were badly hurt. The healers were forced to amputate the greenrider's arm, as it was little more than bone by the time Gwyllioth got them to the ground. The operation, though as successful as an amputation
can be, left him with psychological scars. H'tosk became moody and easily-upsety, uncomfortable with the pitying or horrified looks his missing arm drew from the people he knew. It all came to a head when H'tosk lashed out at V'ryx, assaulting him verbally and driving a wedge between them. The Weyrleader, concerned for the mental and physical state of the green and her rider, as well as for the emotional state of the small Weyr, kindly suggested that H'tosk transfer to Ista Weyr to recuperate. Ashamed and depressed, H'tosk took the out.
The pair moved to Ista Weyr, where they continued to rest and regain their strength. However, even when they were both as strong as they were likely to become, H'tosk and Gwyllioth were grounded and ordered not to fly Thread any longer due to their handicap. No matter how H'tosk protested that there was nothing wrong with Gwyllioth and he only
needed one arm to feed her firestone, their petitions were rejected. Bored, H'tosk found himself called up more and more often to act as an assistant to the Weyrlingmaster, lecturing on various topics (although mating flights and the hazards of Threadfall were generally the lessons where he shone).
Around this time, H'tosk met and befriended Lusean, a young man Searched for one of Ista's hatchings.
Status: Permanently Injured, No Wing
Place of Residence: Evergen Weyr, a weyr at the western end, above the lake
Pets Gold Firi - Small, fast, and the color of deeply burnished gold, Firi is somewhat atypical for a gold fire lizard. While most of her peers are bossy at best, she has a very sweet temper and is actually somewhat timid. She loves being petted and held and is rarely far from human or draconic contact. She also has a distinct fondness for sleeping in peoples' hair, and as a result they often wake to find their tresses hopelessly tangled into a fire lizard nest. Firi bears a single long, wicked-looking Threadscore along her left flank, though the injury has always looked much worse than it actually is and does not impede her movement. It does, however, require a fair amount of extra oiling and care from H'tosk, which he sees to with the same devotion as he does Gwyllioth's needs.
