Fifty million people are eligible to vote, and large queues have formed at some polling stations.

The military council which assumed presidential power in February 2011 has promised a fair vote and civilian rule.

Candidates spar as Egypt presidential polls near close

Tensions have been rising between some of the main candidates in Egypt’s presidential elections as polls near a close on the second day of voting.

Amr Moussa and Ahmed Shafiq have traded accusations, saying false rumours are being spread that each is about to withdraw from the hotly contested race.

Other candidates have also been accused of breaking “election silence” rules.

Mursi and Shafiq go to Egypt poll runoff

Egyptians will choose between between the Muslim Brotherhood and a candidate from the Mubarak-era regime when the presidential election goes to a run-off on 16–17 June, state media confirm.

The Brotherhood candidate, Mohammed Mursi, has a slight lead on former PM Ahmed Shafiq, with a reported 25.3% of votes against 24.9%.

The two represent forces that have battled each other for decades.

Voting in the first round took place peacefully on Wednesday and Thursday.

I've never been to Egypt myself but three years ago two of my friends went to Egypt for a holiday. They went to Hurgada, I think it's called. They said it was nice and they enjoyed it.

Did you know? Hosni Mubarak was a dictator in the opinion of many people. I have just read about dictatorship in the glossary at the end of Chapter 13, “Politics and government”, under the section THE HUMAN ACHIEVEMENT in Volume 2, “The human world”, of the Reader’s Digest Library of Modern Knowledge.

Ousted Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak’s health worsens

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been moved from prison to an army hospital in the capital, Cairo, where he remains in a critical condition.

He is said to have had a series of strokes and to be on a life support machine. Reports that he was “clinically dead” were later denied. But there is no official statement.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people protested in Cairo’s Tahrir Square against a move by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (Scaf) to assume new powers.

The rally was called by the Muslim Brotherhood, which is also claiming victory for its candidate Mohammed Mursi in last weekend’s presidential elections.

His rival Ahmed Shafiq, a former prime minister under Mubarak, has also said he has won.

Did you know? A council of Coptic Christians in Egypt is voting for a successor to Pope Shenouda III, who died in March.
