The strong storm, the worst of its kind in a decade, brought down trees, closed roads and schools and knocked out power lines. Argyll was the worst affected area, with Tayside, the north east and the Highlands badly hit. About 150 000 homes are thought to have lost power during the day on Thursday and more than 70 000 were off overnight. A senior fire officer told the BBC it was the most severe storm in his 20 years of service. Full story at BBC News

An army spokesman said many villagers on the north coast of Mindanao island were swept into the sea after Tropical Storm Washi brought heavy rain. Iligan and Cagayan de Oro cities have been hard hit, with many victims asleep as the floods swept into their homes. Tens of thousands of people have fled to higher ground, the authorities say. Did you know? Many shallow earthquakes are associated with fault movements, but most earthquakes occur at much greater depths than those where fault movements are likely to occur. -------------------- Sylvia A.
