Friday 9 December 2011 Scotland storm: Work to restore power to homes Engineers are trying to reconnect more than 50 000 Scottish homes still left without power after Thursday’s storm.The strong storm, the worst of its kind in a decade, brought down trees, closed roads and schools and knocked out power lines. Argyll was the worst affected area, with Tayside, the north east and the Highlands badly hit. About 150 000 homes are thought to have lost power during the day on Thursday and more than 70 000 were off overnight. Saturday 17 December 2011 Philippines storm kills hundreds in Mindanao flash floods A tropical storm has hit the southern Philippines, triggering flash floods that officials say have killed more than 430 people and left many missing.An army spokesman said many villagers on the north coast of Mindanao island were swept into the sea after Tropical Storm Washi brought heavy rain. Iligan and Cagayan de Oro cities have been hard hit, with many victims asleep as the floods swept into their homes. Tens of thousands of people have fled to higher ground, the authorities say. Tuesday 29 May 2012 New earthquake shakes northern Italy A new earthquake has struck the Emilia region in northern Italy, killing at least 10 people and burying several others under rubble, local media say.All the deaths were in the Modena area. I have just read about earthquake in the glossary at the end of Chapter 2, “Earth and its resources”, under the section THE PHYSICAL UNIVERSE in Volume 1, “The world of nature”, of the Reader’s Digest Library of Modern Knowledge. Did you know? Many shallow earthquakes are associated with fault movements, but most earthquakes occur at much greater depths than those where fault movements are likely to occur.

Did you know? At 15:24 GMT on Tuesday 30 October 2012, at least 20 people across several US states had been reported killed by Hurricane Sandy.
