Scotland storm: Work to restore power to homes

Engineers are trying to reconnect more than 50 000 Scottish homes still left without power after Thursday’s storm.

The strong storm, the worst of its kind in a decade, brought down trees, closed roads and schools and knocked out power lines.

Argyll was the worst affected area, with Tayside, the north east and the Highlands badly hit.

About 150 000 homes are thought to have lost power during the day on Thursday and more than 70 000 were off overnight.

A senior fire officer told the BBC it was the most severe storm in his 20 years of service.

Philippines storm kills hundreds in Mindanao flash floods

A tropical storm has hit the southern Philippines, triggering flash floods that officials say have killed more than 430 people and left many missing.

An army spokesman said many villagers on the north coast of Mindanao island were swept into the sea after Tropical Storm Washi brought heavy rain.

Iligan and Cagayan de Oro cities have been hard hit, with many victims asleep as the floods swept into their homes.

Tens of thousands of people have fled to higher ground, the authorities say.

I have just read about earthquake in the glossary at the end of Chapter 2, “Earth and its resources”, under the section THE PHYSICAL UNIVERSE in Volume 1, “The world of nature”, of the Reader’s Digest Library of Modern Knowledge. Did you know? Many shallow earthquakes are associated with fault movements, but most earthquakes occur at much greater depths than those where fault movements are likely to occur.

That a certain homoqueer paedo is not among those killed by the hurricane is sheer poetic injustice.

Extreme flooding events influence UK climate views

Flooding, more than heat-related weather events, influence UK residents' perception of the risks associated with climate change, a survey has shown.

Researchers found that British people perceived heatwaves had become less common in their lifetimes, while flooding had become more common.

They said the results suggested that warnings about future impacts may not be heeded if they only focused on heat.
