Tuesday 14 June 2011 Apple admits defeat to Nokia in patent wars Nokia has announced that Apple will pay to use the Finnish phone giant’s technologies, in a move that finally marks the end of a long-running legal dispute between the two firms.Nokia initially sued Apple for patent infringements in 2009. Apple countersued, but Nokia extended the action in December last year. Disputed areas included 3G and Wi-Fi technology, as well as caller ID and touch interfaces. Apple will make a one-off payment, the size of which has not been disclosed, and will then pay ongoing royalties. The development could also mean that other manufacturers are more likely to have to pay Nokia for using similar technologies. The Telegraph |

Tuesday 14 June 2011 Nokia, Apple settle patent litigation Nokia Corp. said Tuesday it has agreed to settle all patent litigation with Apple Inc., in a deal that will give a much-needed boost to the company after a string of bad news as it struggles to compete with its US rival.Under the terms of Tuesday’s licence agreement, Nokia and Apple have both withdrawn their complaints to the US International Trade Commission and have settled all patent litigation. That most recent complaint meant Nokia had 46 patents in suit against Apple and in addition to the two ITC complaints, Nokia had filed cases on the same patents in the US, UK, the Netherlands and Germany. Tuesday 14 June 2011 Apple and Nokia settle bitter smartphone patent dispute Apple and Nokia have settled their long-running patent dispute after Apple agreed to pay a lump sum and ongoing royalties to the Finnish manufacture.Nokia sued Apple in October 2009, claiming that 10 patents relating to features such as the screen and encryption were being used in the iPhone without permission. Nokia followed up with another lawsuit in May 2010, alleging that the iPhone and iPad 3G were infringing another five Nokia patents relating to enhanced speech and data transmission. Apple fired back with a countersuit, and the US International Trade Commission found in March 2011 that Apple had not violated these five Nokia patents. However, it appears that Nokia has emerged victorious in relation to the original filing. V3.co.uk |
