In some - many - fanfics, Trunks´ complete name is Trunks Vegeta Briefs. Is that canon or fandom? -------------------- |

As far as I know fandom, never seen him being called "Vegeta" as middle name in any of the shows. I haven't read the original manga's (yet) though. (Just about to finish with DB ^.^)
Personal opinion though, I like it Like in Ember's "A Saiyan for all Seasons" -X- |

Yeah I'm pretty sure what Xaverri said is right; it comes up lots in fandom, but it isn't in the show. And as far as I can remember (its been a while since I read the manga) his name is just Trunks Briefs in the manga too.
I really like the idea of 'Vegeta' being his middle name too, especially because Vegeta was named after his own father (and the planet); the idea ties in themes of tradition. I was just wondering, is it common practice for Japanese people to have middle names? Because if not, that's probably why Trunks doesn't have one- Toriyama probably never even thought about it (not trying to generalise or anything...). -------------------- |

Purely fandom and I think that Trunks is only attributed the last name Briefs more in line with Earth customs (because Saiyans don't have last names).
@Piccolo, I'm not sure if it's really tradition in the sense that it was probably Saiyan arrogance that came into play there. Conquer a planet and name it after yourself, Ego boost. Have a son and name him after yourself, your legacy will live on after you have died! -------------------- |

It is not common practice for Japanese people to have middle names, Piccolo_is_green.
Those that do actually have them are mixed, as sometimes the parents of mixed kids will give their kids a middle name - an English (or whatever their other half is) name to go with their given Japanese first name. That's how it was explained to me, anyway, and what i've noticed. -------------------- |

re-stateing the above, the middle name is just fandom. The only naming practice I know of in Japan was way back in the old days where guys might change their given name when they came of age, although generally this was reserved for the samurai class I think.
Personally, my fandom has Trunks taking the name Vegeta when he's older, and using the name Trunks to differentiate between himself and his father when needed. -------------------- Atashi, Sanjou! ...Oh, wait, this wasn't where I was going... (If you get that reference, I <3 U)
I am the Goddess of Fangirls. Not to be confused with the Goddess of Catboys, although she is a good friend. |

I thought that would be the case. @ Dean: Sorry, I should have specified, when I meant 'it ties in themes of tradition' I meant that it is the way some fanfiction authors interpret and use it (particularly when Trunks is also given the Vegeta), especially when it comes to AUs that have the Saiyans living on Planet Vegeta... its easy to use the whole 'Name your son Vegeta' thing to infer specific things about Saiyan culture, but like I said, thats AU stuff. Talking strictly about canon, I agree that naming everything you can 'Vegeta' is a little arrogant (and thats one of the reasons why I really seem to like old King Veggie ) -------------------- |

I don´t think that Briefs family follows Japanese traditions - starting by their own names. -------------------- |
