Your comments interspersed amidst the editorial suggest that the title of this post should be “Why I am a Joke and Command No Respect”

The whole paragraph has no basis in fact? On what planet are you living?
Image with whom? Try the citizens of almost every country in the world. Travelled beyond your own borders lately and heard what people are saying? Not just the demonstrators, mind you, but intellectuals - engaged and thoughtful people. Imagine what America’s founding fathers would say to GWB’s shenanigans.

Extraordinary rendition and the use of torture violates basic justice and human rights, is illegal under both international and U.S. law, and doesn’t accomplish anything of value. In fact, if you trace the history of some of the lies told by the White House in the run-up to war, you will find that some of the biggest stretches of the truth came from torture victims (eg. Saddam has aluminum tubes to build centrifuges for enriching plutonium).

So, remain jingoistic and xenophobic if you like. You, and those who think like you, are destroying a once-great and respected nation.
