No, actually, the "lose something dear" doesn't have to mean Aerith.

The fortune telling with deep meaning.
Cait Sith's divination about the direction toward Sephiroth turns out three consequences. Disregarding the previous two, the noticeable one is the third result which becomes the chance for him to follow the party- "What you're looking for will
be yours, but you'll lose something very dear."
As the storyline moves on to the event at the Forgotten City, the "something very dear" can be read as losing Aerith, and it also hints at the event of Cloud's reaching his self-breakdown when the story goes to the Northern Crater. (Final Fantasy VII Ultimania Omega, p.120)

It states that the "something dear" CAN be read as losing Aerith. But, it also clearly states that it hints at the very thing you suggested. So, it is possible that it only means one or the other. But, it is also possible that it means both.

Christ I was waiting for someone to say that.

As for Cait's predictions... well if you want to argue he was predicting their wedding and didn't know Aerith would die, it would probably make the most sense that the previous prediction doesn't mean Aerith is the something Cloud will lose. It makes the most sense that way, I think. Because if it does mean Aerith, he probably wouldn't have seen a good future for them, it would have been, I dunno, blank or something.

Aerith: How compatible are Cloud and I?
Caith Sith:... OMG it's blank

... okay it's not that funny but that's... yeah where I'm coming from. Though TBH I was never one to really believe the stuffed cat. I always thought Cloud and Aerith had good chemistry ... I don't need a stuffed cat to tell me that.

also... 97% sure on the FFX Ultimania showing Tidus and Yuna as the official couple. I mean really, why wouldn't it? XD

It also makes more sense in regards to what Cloud was looking for when Caith made the prediction. At that point Cloud was trying to find Sephiroth so the "you will find what you seek part" meant Sephiroth. When Aerith was killed Cloud and the gang were searching for her, not Sephiroth (he just so happened to be there unfortunately).


That for me was why I always took the prediction to be Cloud would lose apart of himself (his mind) after finding Sephiroth.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. Some still might take it to mean Aerith, but if you REALLY wanted to be a smartass or be snarky you could say that Cait Sith said Cloud would lose something and not someone
