Hatching Information :Hatchings here at Caislean Weyr are done in such a way as to keep things mostly realistic according to the way Anne wrote them. In order to do so, we (the admins) will choose how many eggs are in a clutch and determine the color distribution. There are always more blues and greens than any other color, both canon and mutated.
A few notes about hatchings at Caislean:- Eggs may have some color (slight swirls of it) but are traditionally cream-colored. There are no "auras" or pictures on their shells. Therefore, there will be no themed clutches and the color of the dragon inside the egg is purely speculation unless it is a queen egg. Although it is believed by weyrfolk that bronze eggs often display distinctive patterning on their shells, this is a fact that has yet to be proven.
- Queens (fire lizard, wher, and dragon) lay large clutches, due to the imminence of thread. Dragon queens can lay up to 50 eggs, fire lizards up to 20, and whers up to 25.
- Of these eggs, very few will actually hatch. The number that hatches depends on the available candidates.
- We will have NPC dragon impressions because, statistically, a handful of dragon hatchlings in modern pern won't make it through their first year. And we seriously doubt that you want to kill your newborn hatchling.
- Mutated hatchlings are less likely to survive their first year than their regular siblings. Most mutated hatchings will have either NPC impressions or will simply die on the sands. If you impress a mutated hatchling, it is yours to control and you absolutely do not have to kill the poor dear. After its first year of life, it can lead a normal, semi-healthy existence and be just as happy as any other dragon.
- During their first two years of life, green dragons may be fertile. This means that after the first 18 months of life, when they become sexually active, they may rise and clutch. Green dragons lay clutches of up to only 3 eggs and there is no guarantee that any of those eggs will actually hatch. Or a guarantee that the green in question is actually fertile/will clutch at all.
Dragon’s Color :During a Hatching, the admins will act as the hatchlings, meaning we choose which color dragon your character will receive. This is not based on a random roll of dice, we put serious thought into what color dragon will choose your character.
Dragon’s Name :In Anne’s books, a dragon hatchling already knows its name. The same will go for Caislean Weyr. The dragon’s name will be given only when they hatch and have chosen who they will Impress. No one but the admins will know this before the Hatching.
Dragon’s Personality :The baby dragons usually choose a partner by their personality traits. Most often their personality will balance that of their rider’s. That is, if their rider has a tendency to be a risk taker, the dragon will most likely think things through and be more cautious. The dragon will hatch with a
base personality like being shy, social, or level-headed. From the point of hatching and choosing its rider, the dragon is under control of the player that controls the character the dragon Impressed. From this point forward it is up to you to develop your dragon’s personality. Character development is one of the funnest parts of RP and we want you to enjoy it rather than having a dragons entire life and personality spelled out for you.
Please do not ask us for any specific color, name, or personality.**Note: A lot of work goes into choosing dragons and personalities for each candidate that Impresses. This does take up our real life time, so please, do not complain if you do not receive the dragon color of your choice. If we catch you complaining about it, we will be upset and we will confront you. If you continue to complain after we have spoken to you, you can be banned for it. We hate banning people, please do not make us do this. Thanks.**A note on Mutations :The mutations of our canon colors may look shiny and neat, but you need to keep in mind that they are
infertile and sickly. They will remain sickly until they mature. What this means is that your mutated hatchling will never be as big and strong as other dragons of his/her color. They may rise to mate but they will never clutch/produce hatchlings. To this end
mutated browns and bronzes may not rise in queen flights unless the queen that is rising is infertile.
NOT ALL MUTATIONS ARE COLOR-RELATED:There will be occasions where a dragon mutates during gestation and is physically mutated. Extra limbs, missing limbs, blindness, speech impediments, and other unusual physical attributes are rare but not unheard of. By checking "yes" next to "Mutation?" on your character sheet, you are taking the chance of impressing one of these dragons. Throwing a fit, or making a fool of yourself because you didn't get what you expected only makes you look bad. Please keep this in mind.
But I don’t want my character to impress a mutation! That’s fine. If you don’t want a mutated dragon, you are free to request in your candidate profile that you do not want one.
How Hatchings Work :The day of a dragon hatching, the clutching post will be opened for RP. Your job is to get your candidate into that thread and ready for possible impression. Hatchings may take place over a few days, giving time for RP and interaction so please be patient. Admins have lives too. If you are bored waiting for babies to hatch, try interacting with the other candidates.
When a dragon hatches it will have a base personality and color. We will not go into heavy detail about what your dragon’s personality is like, what they sound like, ect. Those things are up to you. As soon as you have impressed a dragon you need to
post a profile for your hatchling using the provided templates, including the hatching post in that profile. It is now up to you to fully develop your dragon’s personality as they mature and grow.
Female Characters are Most Likely to Impress Green :We have no special shiny colors here other than gold that impress exclusively to females. What this means is that if you make a female candidate, unless she is gay or bisexual, she will most likely impress a green dragon. Gay or Bisexual females have a chance of impressing blue or (very rarely) brown dragons. Due to our plotline, female candidates should be rarer than male candidates as holders are reluctant to give up their daughters to search. Please keep this in mind and do not complain when you receive a green dragon.
Do NOT:- Come to us saying you only want your female character to be a queen candidate. If you do, I guarantee you they will not impress queen.
- Ask us not to impress your character because there is no queen on the sands. We have usually already chosen who is getting what and even finished some hatchings even before the eggs are laid. If we have to redo or trash a dragon that we have custom-written for you, you will get nothing.
- This had been said before but it bears repeating: Your female candidate will most likely impress green. We have no exclusively female colors besides gold and if you choose to bring in a female candidate, we are assuming you have no problem with her riding a green dragon.
- Take your hatching and leave. We put so much work into our hatchings. If you have received a dragonet, you can be sure one of our staff members spent a good amount of time slaving over it. There is potential in every color. Not just gold and bronze. Give it a chance before you give up on it. Complaining about or insulting the admin that wrote you a dragon, or throwing a temper tantrum like a small child is grounds for being banned. You have been warned.
I want to impress from the stands!:If you want your character to be a “secret” candidate, that implies that they are not officially a candidate and have a lesser chance of impressing a dragon. Though this makes for interesting RP, please take into consideration that you will
lessen your chances for impressing anything.
If you'd like your candidate to impress from the stands please go:
HereCan you maul my candidate/character?:We would
love to! If you’d like this to happen, please send a PM to an admin and let them know which character and to what degree you would be willing to have them mauled. It definitely adds drama and makes the hatching that much more interesting to RP in. Please keep in mind that you are not guaranteed to impress at any hatching so you may have to wait for this to happen. Please let us know as
early as possible so that we don't have to change our hatching if we've already started to write it.
FIRE LIZARD HATCHINGS : These operate much like dragon hatchings. During a fire lizard hatching, candidates will gather around the eggs with a food supply readily available. The hatchlings will hatch with set personalities and will be RPed by an admin or mod until one of the present candidates catches their attention and impresses the fire lizard. If the clutcher is yours you may request to RP some hatchlings yourself.
How do I get a fire lizard?- Show up at the hatching. They may take a few days so be patient.
- Actively RP your hatching candidate at the hatching. Make sure they make an active effort to impress the fire lizard. Don’t expect one to simply wander up to you and auto-impress.
- Keep in mind that fire lizard hatchlings can go feral. You are not guaranteed a hatchling.
- Do not ask for a specific color before the hatching. We will remember this and you stand a chance at impressing nothing.
WHER HATCHINGS : Wher hatchings are drastically different from dragon and fire lizard hatching. A Gold wher can lay anywhere between 8 and 25 eggs and a green up to 15. Of these eggs, very few will hatch, perhaps 5 or 6 out of a clutch of up to 25. However, unlike dragons, whers do not 'have' to Impress. They can live their life without the bond that is so essential to their cousins. These wild whers tend to be untrustworthy, unreliable, vicious animals,. Without a human there, the wher hatchlings will leave their mother and go wild. Generally if a Wher hatched from a domestic Wher does not bond with a Handler, they are killed. Otherwise, they will become vicious and unpredictable, quite often turning even on those who feed them.
What am I getting into when I attend a wher hatching?:Whers are significantly more aggressive upon hatching than their larger cousins. Even after being gifted an egg, a potential handler stands a chance at being mauled or rejected by the hatchling. Whers can and will go feral, and if not killed quickly can cause grave injury. Your candidate may get lucky but don’t count on them coming away completely unscathed. However, your wher candidate has far more options available to him/her in terms of what they can impress. Any color wher can impress to any gender. This means a man can impress a gold and a girl a bronze and so on.
How do Wher Hatchings work?:When a wher’s eggs are about to hatch, the candidates will be called down to the lower quarters and lined up outside the hatching room. They bow and move forward to select an egg. If the mother wher moves aside and lets them the new handler takes their egg and departs, waiting for it to hatch so that they may form their bond. Rejected candidates must get out of the way quickly or risk an unpleasant death. Wher hatchlings can be unexpectedly violent and, even if they are picked up as eggs they don’t necessarily bond to that person. They have a tendency to go feral and attack viciously. Many wher eggs do not hatch at all.
Wher hatchings are very attendance-based. Unlike dragon hatchings, if you don't show up, you cannot receive an egg. And thus cannot receive a hatching. The first to show up get their eggs first. Those that do not show up to receive an egg, they will be waited on maybe for a day and then their whers will be discarded or made to go feral unless the RPer of that egg has a legitimate excuse. Admins work very hard on hatchings so once again, anyone caught complaining or throwing a temper tantrum is liable to get banned. Thank you.
