C’sian scratched the back of his head and fidgeted restlessly. What was his deal? He couldn’t figure it out. He seemed very restless lately, and it wasn’t because of Grath because if nothing else his hyperactive blue made him more tired than anything else. He looked away from the record he’d borrowed to read while Grath slept off his latest meal and he saw Aurelia padding around on his cot agitatedly. She grumped a little and her tail whipped about behind her as she stood, wings half-furled on his blankets.

“What’s the deal Aurelia?” he murmured softly to her, hoping not to wake Grath. The blue slept soundly. So soundly in fact that he was snoring softly. The golden fire lizard looked up at him, her eyes whirling yellow and orange and he could feel a slight tinge of pain in their link. He eyed her lumpy belly and his eyes widened. He had known that she had flown her maiden flight a few sevendays ago, but he never knew who caught her. It was unlikely to have been Tatters, and as far as he knew the bronze was the only one in the Weyr. But there was that one brown he remembered. And of course blues could fly queens, but judging by the size of the gold’s belly, it hadn’t been a blue.

“Is it that time?” he asked her, knowing he probably looked like a fool for talking to a fire lizard but not caring because she’d been with him a lot longer than even his blue and he was alone anyway.

The gold chirruped at him and bobbed her head. She understood what he was asking. Quietly C’sian got up and leaned over for her to crawl onto his forearm. “Hang on to them just a little longer,” he said, soothing her with a warming thread of thought. “I’ll get you set up somewhere better than here.”

With that he sent a tendril of comfort to his sleeping blue. He wouldn’t be gone long. He walked quickly into the Weyrbowl and made his way to the kitchens where he retrieved and unused crockery pot and took it to the Hatching Grounds. Filling it with warm sand, he then carried it back to the hearth in the kitchens and put it down. Aurelia hobbled off his shoulder and hopped into the pot, pawing eagerly at the sand.

C’sian watched for a few more minutes and a grin of pride stretched across his face when she stopped to lay her first egg. Maybe it was the gold’s pride that was making him feel that way, but he didn’t really care. Her first egg was perfect. A smooth, wetly glowing orb in the sand. Absently he felt Grath awaken, but his attention was on Aurelia and her eggs, now that there were two.

After a few more moments, C’sian could hear the scrabbling of claws on the dining hall floor and his blue bumped into him. C’sian why did you leave me? What’s happening? The blue yawned sleepily and wedged his head under his rider’s arm.

“Aurelia’s laying her eggs, see?” he gestured at his golden fire lizard, who had just pushed the newest egg into a closer pile with the others.

More shiny lizards? Grath asked in awe as he watched Aurelia. She ignored him completely as she dug another depression for her next egg. Where did she get those? Will I ever do that? The blue asked in interest. C’sian snickered softly and scratched his eye ridges.

“No Grath you will never do that. And…I’ll tell you when you grow up a little more…promise,” he said, stroking the dragonet’s neck. After about half a candlemark she finally curled around her eggs and sighed heavily. C’sian reached forward and stroked her golden eyeridges. “That’s my girl. What pretty eggs,” he praised her. She warbled and crooned, rubbing her head against his hand before settling down to guard them. The blue Weyrling looked down to see Grath’s head resting on his knee. The blue was asleep again already. C’sian poked him gently but he didn’t stir. With a heavy sigh he took hold of his blue and hauled him off the floor. Fortunately he was still small enough to carry. A few more days and he wouldn’t be. He was already almost too heavy. “Take care of those eggs Aurelia, I’ll be back to check on you soon,” he said and took Grath back to his little couch in the barracks, letting the gold keep her vigil on her newly laid clutch, to stay there until it hatched.

With the morning rush over, the kitchens seemed to have quieted. Riders had cleared out to tend to their beasts and candidates were busy with their chores. The occasional curious visitor checked in to peek on the golden lizard, fussing over her eggs, but for the most part, the kitchens were empty. Still, when the subtle humming began, it was immediately noticed.

One of the senior blueriders seemed to notice it first, lifting his eyes from his klah and focusing them on the queen. Were the eggs ready to hatch already? Had it been long enough? He walked over to her, peering at her eggs and then jumping when one twitched. "Meat! I need meat! Get it ready!" Drudges scrambled to obey and he hovered greedily over the eggs.

What has you so excited?

Nothing you need to worry about. The eggs would hatch soon and he fully intended to get one for himself. There were bowls of meat being set out and word was spreading quickly about the clutch in the kitchens. Soon this room would be packed full of people. All greedy for a pet of their own.

As if in response to his thoughts, one of the smallest eggs cracked in half and spilled a tiny ice blue fire lizard onto the sands. He appeared to be perfectly healthy, though his wings were a bit too long for his body. The blue chittered angrily at such an undignified entrance into the world and looked about urgently. Where was his food? Where were those who were supposed to feed him? Was he to go hungry and die?

Ignoring the man hovering over the sands, he hopped off of the hearth, spreading little wings and gliding to the floor. There he began weaving through the legs of gathering hopefuls, sniffing frantically. He could smell the meat but couldn't see it and it infuriated him. Food! Where was the food! He had to have it!

How this works: There is about 20 eggs here. That means if you have a candidate and get them to the hatching, they will probably eventually get a fire lizard. You are not *guaranteed* one but there is a fair shot. One fire lizard per character per hatching. Each character can only own a total of three flits total and each PLAYER can only have six. Please keep this in mind. You can bring in as many characters as you want but you will most likely only be impressing one fire lizard.

An admin will be hatching a baby fire lizard and it is up to you to try and impress the little creature. Offer it meat, talk to it, think loving thoughts at it, do whatever you can to entice the fire lizard to you. After a flitt is hatched and someone has successfully enticed it over to them, that admin will post an impression post along with a base personality. Please take that time to name your new friend and write a profile for it. Take your time, there’s no rush, this will probably take a week or so. And have fun!

There was a firelizard hatching! Now that was something he had to see. Maybe even acquire one of those little darlings, a little miniature draconic cousin. The red haired journeyman Harper thanked the young woman that had informed him of the eminent hatching and made haste down to the kitchen. There was quite a fuss outside, but it was pretty quiet inside. Didn't want to scare the babies. Already there was a little blue hatchling out. Lovely little thing.

Hello, there, lovey, Faylar thought gently, from the doorway. He shoved away any doubts, that maybe he was less likely to impress than some here... he had as much of a chance as anyone to impress a firelizard. There were drudges with meat chopped up, they were in the process of readying enough for the hatching. That was good. Didn't want to lose any of these precious little creatures.

There were already a few offering food to the creeling newborn, however it wasn't crowded yet. His own offerings in hand, he crouched nearby and tried to clear his mind of everything but the most pleasant of thoughts. Music, quiet mornings... sunlight on the lake, his first time flying.. all accompanied by a soothing, comforting sense of warmth. Of course, he wasn't the only person doing this. And he noticed the other eggs. There were quite a few.. the gold had done herself proud with this clutch.

Word of the firelizard clutch had spread into the candidate barracks as quickly as a dragon flickering Between, and Ale and the rest of the candidates that were lingering about had immediately rushed out to see. Alamuhan had settled down for a quick catnap and was jostled awake by the stirring of excited people and voices. He was half-asleep and promptly rolled out of his bed with a thump, jarring his arm as he did. That had certainly woken him up. “Ow, ow…” he muttered, rubbing his elbow and blinking his eyes open, calling out wearily to the nearest lad that was rushing to the exit.

“What’s goin’ on?” he queried, and the boy looked around over to him, giving a toothy grin. “Firelizards are hatching in the kitchens!” he responded before he had promptly dashed off. Ale had to think for a moment before he finally perked up in realization. Firelizards! It immediately drew his attention, the boy grinning broadly as he snatched up a shirt and pulled it on, slipping on his boots and heading out himself. He needed to see this! Seeing dragons hatching had been fantastic despite the agony of losing so many, so he figured seeing almost a miniature version would be even better. Firelizards were rare as it was, and he only saw a handful at Caislean, so Alamuhan was shocked to think that there was a clutch out there.

He made his way as quickly as he could to the kitchens, already seeing a hustle and bustle crowding around where the clutch was, plenty of meat bowls set out. He was thankful for his height right then, as Ale was able to look over the shoulders of a few of the people trying to Impress a firelizard right then to see what was going on. The auburn-haired lad worked his way around to gather himself up a bowl of meat just as he heard the first egg crack open and the sound of one already hatched. As the tiny Blue was weaving his way around Ale had just about tipped over the bowl in his hand, a few meat scraps tumbling to the floor. He knelt quickly to scoop them up, noticing how everyone was trying to entice the Blue firelizard and staring at the own meat scrap in his large palm. He held it out as well in case the first hatchling swung his way, looking a bit sheepish and figuring he would learn what to do by watching and doing.

There was never any secrets kept for long in the Weyr. Once even a whif of something interesting or juicy the gossips would spread it around like wildfire. After a few short months of sitting in the kitchens, everyone would have known of the little queen firelizards clutch. However Niale hadn't had much time to dwell on such notions or dreams.

She had never wanted to be a Rider, but Kanrith had other ideas after rampaging through the stands to find her. The young green was growing well though, if she said so herself. There had been few vain or aggressive outburts, which was fine with everyone since the last thing they needed was another killed by the ruthless green. Also this was a reason to remain in the Weyr, as there was someone she did not want to part with...

Grath says those fire lizards are hatching, go get one I want one! There were so few around, and as vain as Kanrith was, it didn't matter if they might later be though a pest or take attention rightfully deserving of the green. She just wanted one when few others did, that's all that matters.

I don't thi- I WANT ONE!

Giving in Niale trotted off for the kitchens. Actually, she had always wanted one, this might be her only oppertunity for quiet some time. Entering the kitchens few were already fluttering around the eggs. A hum from the mother queen and the chirping of a hatchling could be heard. A little blue as pale as ice searched amoung the willing candidates. he looks just like a minitue Xuth...

Stealing a scrap from a bowl that had been prepared hastily she joined the others in trying to coax him to look their way...

It was the humming that caught S’ley’s attention. Much higher pitched than a dragon’s or wher’s hum, but definitely of a timbre that accompanied a Hatching. S’ley hastily set down in the storage room the last bag of supplies that he had been asked to fetch from Kalgir earlier that morning. Zella was a beautiful young woman, even if she was just a kitchen worker, and S’ley often found himself visiting her between practices. But today she had asked if he might pick up some things from the hold, which he had done gladly to win her favor. Booth had easily complied as his saddle had been tied down with sack after sack of kitchen supplies, grain, tubers, fruits, and other such tithes to the Weyr.

S’ley emerged from the storage room and glanced curiously around the kitchen. His dark brown eyes were immediately drawn to the gathering group of people all clustered around… something. Some of the other dragons say there is a firelizard Hatching and that their riders plan to Impress... Will you try for one? Booth’s voice rang boredly in his head, causing S’ley to really think about the question.

I haven't made up my mind yet, came the unsure reply. S’ley had no idea how to go about Impressing a firelizard or even if he wanted one at all. From what he heard from the owners of the very slim population of critters about the Weyr, they usually just went to whoever offered them food first. Leaning back against the nearest counter, S’ley resolved to watch the going-ons for a while so he could learn just how to do it. As he did so, he mused what it would be like to have a little pet, one that looked like a miniature dragon, in his care.

Ah! There was one! S’ley’s eyes snapped to what he could see of the ice blue hatchling between the bodies of those eager to catch his attention. The tiny dragon really was precious, what with the way it was crawling around on the sand, then gliding down in search of food. It reminded S’ley of when he first saw Booth in the Hatching cavern so many turns ago. That settled it. S’ley got up and grabbed a handful of meat scraps from a bowl of meat offered by a passing drudge. If the first adorable creature and his stunning golden mother were any indication of what was to come, S’ley was sure he would be very happy with one as a companion.

Already the room was filling with bodies. So many that he was in severe danger of being stepped on. But then a space around him seemed to clear, and there were several of those strange creatures crouching and holding food out. He could feel some of them, trying to entice him with warm thoughts and affectionate feelings. Others simply offered up food in their pasty little palms, expecting him to leap into their arms and become theirs.

He moved towards the second to offer him food, hesitant about trusting such a strange and ungainly creature but driven by blind instinct. He moved, lightning fast and snapped the piece out of the boy's hand, worrying it in his jaws and then creeling for more. More! He needed more! Always more. Determined, he climbed into the hand of the one who had fed him and began to chew on a finger, twisting his head sideways until rich, coppery blood filled his mouth.

Unsatisfied, he looked up and hissed demandingly, eyes whirling frantic oranges and reds. This creature was his and he would make it obey him until his belly was full and his frantic hunger abated. He hissed again and licked at the blood dripping down one finger, shivering as it ran down his throat.

Noona had paid plenty of attention to the 20 eggs as they sat hardening in her kitchens. She had covered the buckets with a table to protect them and had kept an eye on them. How she would love to have one of the dainty little flitters. When she heard they eggs were ready to hatch she had drudges prepare bowls of meat. They chopped them into chunks, not the size they would for a dragon hatching, smaller chunks and plenty of them. 20 new mouths would need a lot of meat, she had heard they were unbelievably hungry when they first hatched.

When the first one hatched she gasped, it was gorgeous, such a tiny little thing, and so prefect, the blue was just lovely. Noona crouched down, watching, she would get her chance, she would wait and try one of the later eggs. Or should she just have a go with the next one, it would be wonderful to have one of the little lizards. She frowned as people seemed to crowd the little chap, “don’t crowd him, give him some room, we don’t want to frighten him” she said softly, her eyes warm as she watched the little fellow impress. What a lovely sight this was!! And it was taking place in HER kitchen. She preened, she would have to make sure she had more titbits in her pinnie from now on.

Hrrath was sleeping; perhaps the first decent sleep the young brown had gotten since he had hatched… most times the brown was wracked with bad coughs; of which he may or may not grow out of. M’vryk’s sister was we voiced on the opinion that his dragon should and would die… leaving him a broken man. If it came to that though the young brownrider knew that the healers or riders might take mercy on him and put him out of his pain… but… he shook his head clearing the thought away, the last few times he had seriously considered the possibility he had either upset Hrrath or had a montage of degrading words pound though the sides of his head. Yalea and Rusch had agreed that the brownrider could hear dragons… although he seemed to have no control over how and when. This so called talent was proving a mighty hassle, although not nearly as much as the sound of feet drumming along behind him – Risha no doubt. She seemed to have made it her personal mission to make his life a living Fall since the hatching… he didn’t want to deal with it… For someone who was normally so forward in life he found himself pulling back from his sister, not wanting to deepen the void she so clearly believed was already there.

Risha followed hotly on her brother’s heels; he was ignoring her again; typical… that hatching might as well have stuffed a pole up his ass… He really wanted nothing to do with her any more or at least that was the way it was coming across. Arrogant prick… thought just because he had a dragon he was better than her; but she knew better… that young dragonet would die and then her brother would go insane… That was not something she wanted to see happen. If only she should get it through his thick head that he should get rid of the brown somehow them maybe everything would be ok… In truth it didn’t work that way… just as it was true that she wasn’t mad at her brother … instead she was infuriated with his dragon. Why was it that such as sickly beast had to choose him. Why couldn’t it have died and saved him the heartache of trying to keep it alive? Or better yet… why couldn’t it have been healthy? So many of the mutant dragonets that had hatched out of Airith’s clutch were healthy, but not the sorry beast that had attached itself to her brother… it wasn’t fair… that thing would take Mavryk away from her…

She was still following him… M’vryk realized this with some irritation now… Faranth above the last thing he wanted was another of her so called lectures… he really didn’t have the heart to take them anymore. Grumbling a little to himself he made tracks for the kitchens… not even noticing that quite a few Weyrfolk gravitating in the same direction. There was something familiar in the back of his mind though… a humming that seemed to rattle even against the walls of protection Hrrath offered from the voices. Among the hum was nothing pressing though … unlike the desperation of the hatching… in fact… that humming wasn’t even in his head… it was coming from… the hearth? Raising a brow in curiosity he tried to see over the heads of the already gathered Weyrfolk… what had gotten into everyone? Out of the corner of one of his eyes he thought he saw a flash of blue hide… but he didn’t remember any of the dragonets being that small as to fit between the legs of so many people. Firelizards perhaps? He remembered the presence of both a gold and bronze in the Weyr… but didn’t remember hearing anything about a clutch; but then again he had been much more focused on the welfare of his dragon.

Oh for the love of small dragons… half snarled Risha as someone pushed their way between her and her brother. What was with all these people?! It was one thing that her brother was ignoring her and now she had to content with more rude people. She half shouldered one of the meat carrying drudges out of the way as she sought to close the gap between herself and her bother. He would listen to her; she would make him, she would also make him see reason about the fact his dragon was so sickly. Something of a space cleared in front of her… finally… she stepped though it, against the annoyed shots of the people who had made the space in order to try and impress the first hatched new firelizard into being their companion. She didn’t care; attempting to blaze over to her brother it was soon pretty clear that he wasn’t going to turn around. Folding one hand onto her hip a tsking sound escaped her… she needed something to throw at him to get his attention. Out of the corner of her eye she caught sight of one of the bowls of meat and lifting a piece out of it she threw it at Mav.

Something wet and relatively warm caught him in the right temple; which only had a few stitches left in it after he cut it at the touching… but with the flesh meat leaving a slimy trail of its own it looked like M’vryk had split is temple again. reaching up he half caught whatever it was; the piece of offending meat falling into his hand as the Weyrling rider looked up to see where it had come from… Risha’s smug little smile told him everything… she had thrown it to get his attention. Well she certainly had it… including a scathing look of his own in her direction. From the looks of it she was about ready to start again, no doubt on the so called matter of Hrrath; but was cut short at the sound of a rather predatory hiss that was far too soft to be a watchwher. His own hazel eyes found the source in the form of a firelizard… that same patch of pale blue hide he had seen before. The little one seemed content to round on one of the hopefuls; accepting his offer of a feed. Again something wet pounded into the side of his head and M’vryk shot another glance in his sister’s direction.

A few more people muttered a few things in Risha’s direction and half glaring at them the candidate half stepped back; barely missing the blue firelizard as he found the food offered to him. Ugh… that just put more space between them… Mav had said he wanted to talk this out; he just had very different views and of late she had been uncharacteristically stubborn, she was just rather lucky that her voice hadn’t disappeared on her yet as was usually the case. When He looked up at her again – after she threw the second piece of meat at him she waggled her finger in his direction signaling that he should come over and face her front and center. In a move that was very much the Mav she knew before his Impression the lad stuck his tongue out at her and then pretended to be very interested in something else on the other side of the room. Grumbling Risha lobbed another piece of meat at her brother’s temple and watched as it made its mark again. This time he didn’t so much as look up so the next piece that left her hand was rather hefty thrown; so much so that its wet ‘splat’ as it hit her brother’s temple was heard over the faint thrumming of the golden clutch mother.

Two more pieces of meat managed to drip off his temple and into his hands… Faranth help him or he might just throw them back at her… Beside him though there was something of a giggle and a young Weyrbrat beamed up at M’vryk. Shaking his head the younger lad was happy to explain that was not how you did it; you had to hold the meat out in the direction of the hatching firelizards. It was at the boy’s urging that M’vryk tried it… it was certainly more mature – if only just – than throwing it back at his sister.
