Allek stretched as he exited the dining hall. His stomach was pleasantly full of what he couldn't help but think was an excellent meal. The Weyr cooks were far better than he ever was or could be.
We will go and I will eat now. Allek smiled at his wher friends command. He turned and trotted over to the brilliantly colored creature.
"Of course, Allesk. Being here there's hardly a reason to ever miss a meal, so long as we're careful not to eat more than our share." Allek said, happy to have found somewhere where Allesk's meals weren't begrudged. Every semi-holding or holding he'd come to had always balked at the heardbeast or two Allesk required to be satiated. Of course, her messy eating probably didn't help either. Allek was the first to admit that Allesk was a bit bloodthirsty, in a cunning and devious way.
Allek leapt up and settled on her back, well used to riding her without straps, despite that he had two sets. In their younger years, he hadn't had any, and bare back was the only way he could ride her. Allesk leapt forward, swift as always, in the jerk that had so often nearly thrown Allek from his seat. Now, the man just leaned forward and relished the chilly air of the autumn.
"Come on, Allesk, you can go faster than this, even if you are hungry!" Allek called, a challenge to his friend. Both of them enjoyed running, whether Allek was riding or not. Allesk immediately responded, with a harsh cry, and a speeding up of her limbs. Allek grinned even as the wind forced tears to begin to form in his eyes.
Upon reaching the feeding ground, Allesk didn't stop. She ran, full tilt at the fence holding the herdbeast, and even as Allek tightened his grip, she leapt, wings spreading for what little lift they could provide, clearing the fence easily. She landed square on the back of an ornery old milchbeast, long dried up. Allek leapt clear even as Allesk what should have been a killing blow to the beast's spine.
As Allek got out of range of any blood or organs, he noticed that the beast wasn't dead. Allesk's blow hadn't killed her, merely severed her spine, paralyzing her. It was a new one to him, but Allesk didn't seem to care as she ripped the beast open from neck to belly. The man, despite his experience with such scenes, winced as the blood gushed clearly out of it's belly.
"Wow, Allesk, you could have killed it fully first, you know." He said, a slightly ill grin on his face. The green wher snorted.
These old things taste best when fresh. I've never had once fresher than this. Allesk said, and Allek could swear the wher chortled at his shyness. You have seen worse things, friend. Allesk added, before ignoring him in favor of her meal. Allek nodded, conceding that fact, before leaving the fenced area. Allesk's feeding was keeping the hear bull away for now, but Allek did not want to chance an attack if the beast happened to spot him outside her zone of fear.
