Welcome!
GREETINGS
Welcome to Caislean Weyr!
It’s the end of the 9th Interval and Pern’s fate lays in the hands of Caislean Weyr.
A cataclysm the likes of which the planet has not seen since its creation has rendered much of the northern lands useless and it’s the job of the few struggling dragonriders left on Pern to re-colonize these harsh lands before Thread returns.

Dragon Candidates...- should be 10-19 turns of age. Any younger or any older and they (by tradition) will not be allowed to stand on the Sands. Queen candidates can be up to 25 turns old, but if there they break the age limit and there is no queen egg on the sands they cannot/should not Impress. NOTE: Wher candidates can be any age as long as they are fit and healthy.
- should not be crippled beyond use. These need to be physically fit young people who can handle the physical responsibility of raising and riding a young dragon. Slight maladies shouldn't be much of a problem (a limp, weak wrist, ect.), but anything that keeps them from taking care of a dragon or a wher makes them unfit to Stand.
"There are certain caveats in Impressing. One, the candidate must be in good health and working order (i.e. no physical disabilities such as blindness, deafness as raising a dragon requires a physically active person. They aint easy to wash and oil everyday.) So, no, unless the candidate was in the very early stages of pregnancy, she would not be admissable to the hatching grounds.
"There should be sufficient women in good shape found on Search so that no one needed to present a pregnant woman, no matter how good a queen rider she might become. People love to put up bizarre circumstances...but one can be foolishly impractical, too. This is one position in Pernese life that is envied but actually has far more work attached to the honor than many would suspect.
--from Anne McCaffrey in response to an email from Debbie Griffin
- should not be mentally unstable/deficient. They need to have a healthy mind in order to bond with the dragon and take the mental strain of Impression.
- are preferably MALE. Remember in this Pern Holders aren't willing to give up their daughters for Candidacy. Female candidates are more likely to be weyrbred if they're out there, but the majority of candidates should be male.
- should not own runnerbeasts. Unless another character can take them, these animals will become property of the Weyr. A weyrling does NOT have time to take care of a runner.
- Please use your own good judgment. We don't like to be strict about this, but when people aren't responsible and start trying to bend the rules, it ruins the fun for everyone else. If you have to ask first, more than likely you shouldn't do it!
