Dragons cannot be gay. I’m sorry. They simply do not have the physical capabilities for same-sex…sex. Whine, moan, complain. It won’t change the facts.

sexual orientation is not defined by the mechanical ability to have sex. why would there be an absence of homosexual orientation in a species because they can't have sex? they're not reproducing either way, are they?

are you aware that real life animals are gay and form lifelong gay bonds without being able to consummate that? downstairs i have a book about greylag geese in which the author personally observed gay male goose couples who did just that; they couldn't have sex because both wanted to be on top and neither was willing to be underneath. they were still gay.

i was feeling enthused about writing a gay dragon in a large part because i was very interested in how that would unfold in a species with the mating rituals that dragons have and the difficulties/impossibilities that would pose; i thought it could be really neat, perhaps having the female rise but not choose, etc.

but if you're not interested in dialogue about this

Ok look. I'm not that much of a canon whore but there are certain things about canon that I respect. As much of a fucking IDIOT as Anne Mccaffrey is, I just can't see Pern dragons being gay. I'm not "intolerant" and I don't have anything against gays. At all. Most of my characters are gay. I love RPing gay. I love gay people. But the reality of the fact here is that Pern dragons, in my opinion at least, only truly "love" their riders. Their riders are their life. I can't see an instinct-based creature going that far out of its way to break the heirachy and instinct that had been bred into it for centuries.

Yes there are some earth animals that carry out homosexual "relationships", but I truly doubt they have any concept of what they are doing and see it as more compainonship than anything else really. With the exception of a FEW animals, dolphins, apes, ect...most animals run purely on instinct and the need to procreate. Dragons are no different. They were genetically engineered with a STRICT heriarchy. As sexist as it is, it works. And it works well for them.

And really, at the risk of sounding like an enormous bitch, I didn't write this universe. None of us did. Dragons rise only to mate. Otherwise, they really aren't thinking about it. They might have a passing friendship or affection for another dragon, but I doubt they truly "love" anything but their riders to the extent to which you are referring.

It's not intolerance, it's not us being stupid, it's just how it is.

None of this matters, really cuzz I'm not on this site anymore and I don't have a say. But I just felt like putting my two cents in. Of course now I'm some horrible gay hating bitch and we're all intolerant idiots because we don't think Pern dragons can be gay. Please forgive us.
