Her head was heavy and wracked with pain. she had been traveling non-stop for almost three weeks now. She knew no homeland and no pack, she had been following after a wandering and winding deer path that never seemed to end, she was positive and certain there was a young calf with a birth deffect that kept falling behind, but the mother seemed protective for even when the fawn was almost two miles behind the main herd the small mother seemed to be right next to it. That strangely worried Devanti as she went, her pelt matted with burrs and other types of debis that had collected to her while she had been trekking through thick bramble and other oddities that the deer had been using to escape any followers. But the hunger that knawed at her belly was enough to keep her going stronge, no matter how much she longed just for a few moments rest, she knew that the deer would be bedding down by the large quiet lake at the beginnings of the wolf pack territory. She was a loner and knew that taking a creature in a wolf's packland was like comiting tyranny against the king. But the fact that starvation was near made her forget nature's law and she continued to follow the strange curving path of the deer, at some points the deer went far out of their way and even crossed over their previous paths several times, causing Devanti to travel back on the path she had just come or on a fools trail. That aggiated her more then any other trick she knew. Suddenly she heard a faint sound ahead, it was like a stick breaking and she knew that it was something rustling ahead in the ferns and bramble at her flank.
Fawns had no scent, and apparently she had almost slipped past the deformed sickling hiding deep within the undergrowth. She turned and almost a sick smile slid over her lips, the thought of warm meat sliding smoothly down her gullet and sating her hunger was almost too much. She took a deep breath and was amazed still that young deer had no scent at all too them. Strange how life works, cubs had their parents to protect them and deer at their lack of scent. Devanti trekked into the green where she assumed the fawn was hiding, and then she found it. Huddled against a mossy old fallen log, we was almost awe stricken as she saw it's deformity, no wonder is moved so slowly, it had three and a half legs, its front right fore was only grown to the knee. She almost felt bad for it, she hardly knew anything too last longer then a few days with such a deformality as severe at this. But the sound of it's weak heart pumping softly in its chest and the sickly scent that wafted up from its dull pelt told her it didn't have much time left and that the mother had probably realized this and simply left it there, or else the mother was simply searching for better food even though this place seemed fertile enough. Maybe searching for water or the herd and the fawn would only slow her down? Devanti had no idea, none the least, but she looked into it's pale gray eyes and flicked her ears back against her head, it was almost too easy as her sharpened fangs impaled the calf's throat latch, she ripped backwards and the blood pooled beneath the young creature. It kicked and gasped but soon the small body was immobile.
It was sad... almost.
She licked her bloody chops and gazed down to the crimson stained bones that littered the ground and the few peices of intestine and other non-wanted items at her paws. Her ear flicked and she shook her brown pelt free of any debris and exited the thicket. She returned to the deer path, with a fully belly she followed disinterestedly and watched the forest all around her. It was green and fertile, she came across a few old deer beds and knew that the deer had probably camped their earlier in the day before heading for their destination, Serenity Lake, that was where she was headed as well, the pickings were fine in this area but the water supply was low and the lake as vast and as beautiful as it was was a strange place to be. Something strange lingered there, something almost like death, like lost hope was there. You couldn't really put your tongue to it but it was like walking into a living buffet. So many prey animals gathered as well as predators... maybe it was the fact that fear, temptation and tension all lurked within the shadows around the clear fish infested lake. Simply know that something might be watching you from the dark contours of the forest, that you might be someones next meal, it put you on the edge and made you spook at every sound. Devanti felt just like the lera she hunted when she went into that place, and she was amazed at how easily herbavores lingered their, like they didn't fear for their lives at every moment they stood unprotected on the shore. She shook her head and then she stood at the edge of the woods, looking out across the vast open space between the lake and woods.
Such a run would be impossible if you were trying to evade an attack. She looked about cautiously, such a calm and tranquil place plagued with such amounts of terror and death didn't seem right. But Devanti continued across the long sandy beach towards the lake, the sun twinkled off the large wide surface of liquid at the center of the hot sandy shore. Suddenly she stopped, her audits spun on her cranium and her tail lifted, fur prickling along her spine, she spun with a snarl as a rabbit darted from the face of dark shadows and went bounding for the lake. She immediently felt relief flood her tense joints and she made her way for the lake. As she stood on the edge of the lapping waters she noticed how lake it had become and how far she had traveled to capture that deformed little fawn. She sighed and her muscles rolled like a disturbed pond as she dropped her sleek muzzle towards the unsettled water. Her pink eraser dropped and she lapped deeply from the pool. Enjoying it's cool clean taste, it flooded her body and seemed perfect, almost too perfect. She opened her eyes and jumped back, startled at the sight of her own reflection. She approached the her image once again, heart pounding from her spook, she noticed how much she had changed, how well her face had been carved and reformed from her strenuous travels. She didn't think she was at all beautiful, not as beautiful as she once was, such journies had made her mascue and added a strange shine to her pelt. She licked the droplets of cool water from her lips and stood proud before the water, she accepted herself for who she was.
