The Truth
Averis Weyr was created by hopeful young green and blue riders that had wished for a better chance at life. That had hoped for a safe haven amongst the harshness of the reality that has been settling around them. They created their Weyr upon the Eastern part of the Southern Continent. The Weyr took turns and turns of planning and hiding to create. Nearly a full generation of blue and green riders sneaking out on their free time, from different Weyrs, spent their lives to create what would become Averis Weyr, and they recreated along the turns. The completion of the Weyr meant that they now needed people to run it, and Weyrwoman Haithiara of Gold Ludieth was recruited because of her kindness and gentle heart. Not to mention that she was the youngest Queen rider in Benden Weyr which made her a perfect candidate for the position.
Unfortunately, havens never last, and this one was no exception. When the bronze and brown riders started filtering in the new Weyr, and arguments broke out amongst the other Weyrs, the people transferring into the Weyr were no longer open about blueriders and greenriders being equal in importance. And when Ludieth took flight, bronze Rairoth caught her, bringing in a merciless Weyrleader into the Weyr. His word was law and any who opposed it suffered the consequences. Sadly, for those in Averis, greens and blues would never become equal to the other colours. They would forever be the rejects of the Weyr. And once this equality had perished, the other Weyrs slowly started to accept the presence of another fighting Weyr, especially with thread so close on the horizon.
Today in Averis, the reality is pure and true. Green and Blue workers are the drudges in the dragonrider world. Greenrider are whores, and anyone can use them as they desire, almost slaves to the other riders. Blue riders are no better. Homophobia exists, for a homosexual man isn’t a true man, and a homosexual woman can’t be considered a woman because she isn’t bearing children every nine months.
The men, the Bronze riders, but mainly the Weyrleader, have the Weyr under their full control. The Weyrwoman is leader only in name, for everyone truly knows that she is only there to have her dragon bear the children, much like the reality of the women of Pern. There is such a thing as journeywomen, but they are frowned upon, for a proper woman should always be protected, and should only be made to take care of a household. Female candidates aren’t even always chosen by worth, most of the time, simply because of a pretty face.
Life isn’t fair, and it seems that only the lowly know this. But there is nothing that they can do… Who wants to be mistreated for the rest of their lives? Sometimes, staying quiet is the best way to live. And regrettably, that is the way life is in the Averis of the present…
