Seď’oren lay curled upon a fur that was dropped upon the floor of his room. His jacket was tied tightly around him, and he was in full riding gear. Hey, it wasn’t the most comfortable way to sleep, but at least it was something! Not to mention that despite the weather of the summer, the stone floors would always be cold to sleep on. His arms were resting beneath his head; his only pillow against the hardness of the ground. He slept restlessly, shifting positions every now and again, trying to get comfortable despite his current bed. Next to him, his dragon’s head rested against his body, attempting to keep him warm.

Why wasn’t he upon his bed, one might ask? Well, upon his bed as Vallinthya, the Gold Fire Lizard. She peered down at the floor curiously every time the man moved. Every now and again she would drop down, sit upon his neck, and aid in warming him up. However, every other time, she was up upon his bed, curling around her eggs. Yup! His bed had become her hatching grounds. The furs were covered in pans with warm coals, and more furs draped above them! His pillows were currently covering her eggs and insulating them as she sat down and preened herself. The eggs themselves had been sitting there for five to six sevendays, and they were hard now. Any day, they would begin to shake and crack, and the little Gold knew that it was going to be today! She was most certain about it!

Resting beside the eggs was Devious, the blue fire lizard that had determined it to be his sole job to protect these eggs with his life and keep turning them when the Queen wasn’t around. He was just like a mother as he crooned and chirped lovingly to them; singing them a sweet lullaby to ensure their health and comfort. Of course, he didn’t care if he woke Seď’oren up during all hours of the night, and even during the day when he was allowed a moment to nap peacefully. The eggs were all that mattered to him, and to be honest, the greenrider was just eager for those eggs to hatch and be out of his life. The floor just wasn’t as comfortable as one would think.

Vallinthya chirped loudly all of a sudden, a sort of hum escaping her throat as she nudged one of the eggs gently. She had seen it move! Quickly Devious joined in, and with all the racket, the rider was forced to wake up.

“Urgh, what time is it, Ella?” He inquired softly, almost painfully as he sat up from his nap. He saw the eggs rocking upon his bed, and he couldn’t help but feel the thrill that his companions were feeling. They would soon be gone! He couldn’t believe his luck! Tonight, he’d be in his bed!

~Just after noon,~ Ella rumbled as she stared at the eggs, shifting eagerly, her wings rustling. ~Can I call people in?~ She inquired eagerly, walking towards the edge. Without even waiting for an answer, she sent out a bugle across the Weyr. ~The eggs are hatching! Come to Seď’oren’s weyr quick!~ She called out. This was so exciting!

“The eggs are hatching?” Taliah repeated, startled by the sudden voice intruding upon her mind. “Shards, I didn’t even realize there were any eggs clutched,” she muttered to herself. The young woman glanced down the long corridors that made up Averis Weyr, wondering where under the double moons Seď’oren’s weyr was. Shells, more importantly, who was the man? With the honorific, she assumed he was a rider, but beyond that, who knew? And, by Faranth’s egg, why were dragon eggs hatching in some rider’s personal weyr?

Unorganized this whole place was! Why, she’d been wandering around the premises for over ten minutes now and not one person had thought to inquire of her presence or offer her food, shelter, and the opportunity to stand for one of these currently hatching eggs. It was positively ridiculous, and Taliah firmly intended to have a word with the Headwoman about it…whenever she found the sharding woman anyway.

It was by pure luck that Taliah happened to stumble upon the rider’s weyrs. The sound of chattering firelizards led her straight to the greenrider’s personal quarters, and upon her arrival, Taliah paused in the doorway. Despite the open invitation, it was purely good manners to request entrance to a stranger’s room, especially when that someone was of the opposite gender. Though Taliah didn’t put all that much stock into males being the superior gender, she did have a certain grudging respect for propriety…at times.

“Excuse me, sir. I had heard that the eggs were—” the words died away on her tongue as her eyes locked on the bed.

Those were most certainly not dragon eggs. Taliah pursed her lips as her eyebrows raised indignantly. All that hustling and bustling…for firelizard eggs. Well, they were quite the rare commodity back home, but after anticipating hatching dragonets they were a bit of a letdown. Regardless, this was still an excellent opportunity. After all, it seemed the man was just giving the little eggs away to anyone. How insane this place was! Shards, outside the Weyr, the only people who got eggs were Lord Holders and Master Craftsmen and other notable people. But here she was, a new arrival and possible candidate, and with any luck she’d get to have her very own flitter. Taliah had a feeling that she’d definitely like this place.

“Please, excuse my discourtesy. My name is Taliah and I am newly arrived to the Weyr. Regardless, I heard about the firelizard eggs hatching and would like to request the opportunity to participate,” Taliah said elegantly, smoothing her face into an amiable expression.
