Ok, I've read about a million conflicting threads on this, so Im goin to write up a summary:
*NOTE* All P's have different personalities, some may be more aggressive than others. Fish that never work: Small Cichlids, Sharks, medium to large Tetras, Catfish, Rays, Puffers, Gouramis, Angelfish, Frogs, ABF's, Cons, Cory's. Fish that sometimes work: Oscars, Jags, Midas, Trimac, Silver dollars, Pacu, Khulis, Gars, Red Devils, Green Terrors, various large, robust Cichlids. Fish that are known to work most of the time: Neons/Cardinals, Exodons and Plecos. Im not saying this is the Piranha law, written in stone, but this seems to be the general knowledge I have gained through hours of *thought to be* useless internet grazing. Enjoy your P's. --Dan -------------------- King of the Stubborn Asses

i would just have never work as catagorie cause there piranhas man
face it, they ARE more then likely going to eat what ever you put in there, even other piranhas. i dont think any thing should be put in a tank of piranha expecting it to work out. i say save your money and headache just incase you introduce a disease just cause you want your ranas to have some buddies or something else to look at in the tank -------------------- |

Of course, but not all Piranhas are the same. I believe many people successfully keep fish for long periiods of time with Red Bellies, for example, both others can't keep a goldfish in the tank for more than 20 seconds.
It's all up to the owner, and the risks they want to take. --Dan -------------------- King of the Stubborn Asses

Pacus are a safe bet, they are natural mimics of piranhas (color and shape wise) and they usually dont get taken

What was the size difference? feeding schedual? and tank size? those are three valid reasons to explain that

Actually they do matter, cuz if the p's where much large then theyre going to be canabalistic on what evers smaller, feeding matters cuz if your fish are hungry theyre going to pick out the slowest weakest one, which when you compare to pacus to piranhas the pacu is much slower and less graceful, and tank size most of all cuz if the tanks packed to the gills they ps are going to weed the tank out

bottom line.... NOTHING!!!
they even kill each other sometimes... bottom line is that if your gonna keep anything with a shoal or a single solitary piranha... make sure its cheap and easy to replace IE common plecos and the best tankmate imho TALKING CATFISH aka raphaels -------------------- |

I once had a common pleco with my reds for almost a year. It was weird that they decided to eat him one day. I kept them well fed, but everyone knows how unpredictable they are.

buck tooth=exodon sometimes it works sometimes it don't by nature piranha are scavengers and will rarely attack a healthy fish. if any fish in a tank ever has a "bad day" it's a safe bet that it won't make it. if a fish bleeds it's all over. my large rhom has had around 150 tankmates at any given time. mostly all small tropical fish and some dwarf sunfish, all in a planted 125g. the rhom rarely ever ate a live fish except for my CAE's and clown loaches. seems bottom dwellers and the rhom didn't get along. |
