Hi

You need to get some Sunscreen spray for the coat if not the coat can have brown on it if you let him stay out in the sun to much. If he is just a pet and not a show dog then you don't have to worry to much.xxx

It does not matter what shampoo you use they still can go brown in the sun light. You must get a spray to put on his coat befor he stays out in the sun.xxx

Personally I would avoid a spray as the dog may inhale it and suffer an adverse reaction. I would think a conditioner containing a sunscreen would be the way to go but here you have to take into account that dogs lick their hair and so you would need to be sure there is no danger to your dog from a component of the product you use.

Suz mentioned a product which you can buy from Amazon.

Chris Christensen
Chris Christensen Ice on Ice Conditioner with Sunscreen R-T-U 16oz pump
5.0 out of 5 stars See all reviews (1 customer review) |
Price: $12.00

There is no mention of the sun protection factor in this description though.

After a bit more research, I see that where hair products are concerned the sun protection factor isn't stated because no reliable guarantee can be given. This is because it's unlikely that every single hair will be evenly coated in sunscreen and also that the sunscreen is easily completely removed for example, by moisture or by brushing.

Although the Chris Christensen product is a spray, it does also come in a concentrate form which you dilute in water 1:16 and can then pour over the dog as a final rinse.

But it does look like the best solution is to keep your beautiful 'Prince of Darkness' out of strong sunlight.

Hi

A sunscreen spray is what i use on my Black American it does them no harm you only spray them when they are going out in the sun shine. ( when you let them in the garden to play ) We also used this on my Black Poodle. If you want his hair to stay Black then use a sunscreen spray on your dog. There is no harm in useing a Sunsreen Spray on your dog been useing them for years. So Bapeed if you have never used them how would you no ?????.x

Also you cannot always keep your dog out of sunlight they have to go out and play and out for walks so to stop the coat going brown use a spray.

The one i use is Show Groom with Mink Oil Vitamin E and Sunscreen.

It is by Mr Groom in USA.

The reason I wouldn't use it as a spray or risk it on the coats of my own dogs, fancy pants, is clearly printed on the can of the very product you use - which states 'Danger: Harmful or Fatal if Swallowed'

You're right in saying I have never used sunscreen on my dogs but that is for a reason. I'm sorry if you thought I was getting at you in any way but I most certainly wasn't.

I haven't contributed here because I think I know better than anyone else but only out of interest in the subject under discussion which I have considered in respect of my own dogs.

Whether our dogs are black or any other colour their hair is damaged by exposure to the sun as is their skin and their noses - so this subject of protection from damage from exposure to sunshine is of interest to us all as dog owners. x

Hi

I have 5 american cockers and i don't worry about my other dogs as 1 is Buff 1 is Black and Tan who is not a Show dog any more and the other 2 are Parti's which are not shown any more the only one i show at the moment is my Black Boy. I put Sunscreen on him as i don't want his coat to be brown. My dog is not going to Swallow it at all i would be quite mad if i let him do that. I think any spray for humans or dogs would say the same.most people in the dog world use some spray if for sunscreen or hair spray, we are not silly people we do no what we are doing been doing this for years did the sunscreen for my poodles as well they Never came to any harm at all.If you don't want to use spray as your dogs are pets that is ok but when you have show dogs you want them to look good.

You cannot keep dogs in when the sun is out they must go out.

I think when it saids on the can Danger Harmful if Swallowed i would say that is for the person as it also saids call a physician.Mink oil is the sunscreen which is ok for dogs.x

Bapeed the sprays are fine - you would not spray near the mouth and spray fairly close to the coat, the risk of the dogs swallowing any is near to none unless your very very uncarefull, i work as a groomer and use these sprays daily - specialy on my own dogs and trust me i wouldnt if they wenrt safe.

Hi Suz! Thanks for your post!

Earlier I spoke to my dogs' groomer and she told me she also uses a conditioner on my boys which contains a sunscreen. She said that she bought Ice on Ice last week to try on her own dog but has been using Wondercoat in her salon for some time. Whatever it is she's been using on mine I have to say that their coats feel so lovely afterwards and I've never got a similar effect when I bathe them myself! They also stay fresh and clean longer than when I do it myself. You can't beat good experienced professional grooming - it's worth every penny! xx

very interesting thread since i have only ever used liquid human sun screen for the noses and ears etc for my white mini's. I have never used sunscreen on my black schnauzers and in all honesty hadnt considered it for finn either but we have a poodle who is sunbleached so it actually makes you think about it a bit more. Thanks for all the recommendations i will get some in.....however with all this rain i fear it might remain redundant in the cupboard for this year! lol

I groom Jesse at home, but I do use Plushpuppy shampoo and conditioner, blow dry cream as well as a protein coat balm (which protects against sun) once dry. In between, whenever I brush him, I use a spray on conditioner (sometimes with sunscreen) as it makes it easier to brush, softer and smells nice. I reckon his coat looks and feels just as good as it would with a proper groomer biggrin.gif laugh.gif

bapeed, I have heard good stuff about Ice on Ice, and I am sure you could get what your groomer uses as well for when you bath them at home. wink.gif

Yes LurcherGirl - I see from the photos and the videos of Jesse that his coat looks superb! You do a great job and Skye has a truly glorious coat too!

I like what I've read about the Ice on Ice and will look into getting some shampoos and conditioners that give me a result more like what I get from their groomer.

I think maybe if we were to change the discussion to protective rainwear the sun just might decide to make an appearance!!! LOL!!
