Conservative media publisher and activist Andrew Breitbart, who was behind investigations that led to the resignations of former Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York and former U.S. Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod, has died in Los Angeles. He was 43.

Breitbart's website, bigjournalism.com, announced Thursday he died of natural causes in Los Angeles. His death was confirmed by breitbart.com editor-in-chief Joel Pollak, who said he was at the hospital, and by the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Breitbart was walking near his house in the Brentwood neighborhood shortly after midnight Thursday when he collapsed, said his father-in-law, Orson Bean.

Someone saw him fall and called paramedics, who tried to revive him. They rushed him to the emergency room at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, Bean said.

Breitbart had suffered heart problems a year earlier, but Bean said he could not pinpoint what happened.

"I don't know what to say. It's devastating," Bean told The Associated Press.

Larry Dietz, watch commander at the Los Angeles County coroner's office, said a cause of death was unknown and an autopsy was likely.

Reaction to his death was quick.

"RIP `O Mighty Warrior!" Texas Gov. Rick Perry said in a message on Twitter, the medium where Breitbart confronted his critics with often abrasive messages. Indeed, Breitbart's final message called a follower "a putz."

His online profile, meanwhile, called him a "mild-mannered family guy" and "husky male model."

Media Matters, the liberal watchdog that was a frequent Breitbart critic, said the organization's "thoughts and prayers are with his family today."

"We've disagreed more than we've found common ground, but there was never any question of Andrew's passion for and commitment to what he believed," said Media Matters' Ari Rabin-Havt.

Republican presidential contenders also weighed in.

Rick Santorum called Breitbart a "powerful force" after learning of his death from reporters at a rally in Dalton, Ga. "He will be what a huge loss ... for our country and certainly for the conservative movement and my prayers go out to his family," Santorum told reporters. "I'm really sorry to hear it."

Mitt Romney posted to Twitter: "Ann and I are deeply saddened by the passing of (at)AndrewBreitbart: brilliant entrepreneur, fearless conservative, loving husband and father."

Newt Gingrich tweeted: "Andrew Breitbart was the most innovative pioneer in conservative activist social media in America. He had great courage and creativity."

Breitbart's fans have praised him for exposing government corruption and media bias.

Sherrod, who is black, was fired from her job as Georgia state rural development director in July 2010 after an edited video surfaced of her making what appeared to be a racist remark. She is seen telling a local NAACP group that she was initially reluctant to help a white farmer save his farm more than two decades ago, long before she worked for USDA.

Missing from the clip was the rest of the speech, which was meant as a lesson in racial healing. Sherrod told the crowd she eventually realized her mistake and helped the farmer save his farm. She has since filed a lawsuit against Breitbart.

Breitbart's websites also featured a 2009 hidden-camera video that brought embarrassment to the community group Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. The videos show ACORN staffers offering advice on taxes and other issues to actors posing as a prostitute and pimp.

Those videos triggered a firestorm of criticism, with some ACORN employees appearing willing to support illegal schemes involving tax advice, misuse of public funds and illegal trafficking in children.

An internal review later concluded the videos "feed the impression that ACORN believes it is above the law." The internal investigation and a Government Accountability Office report cleared ACORN of criminal activities.

Even so, public pressure led Congress to block previously approved funds from going to ACORN and to stop future payments. Roughly 10 percent of ACORN's funds came from federal grants and the group eventually disbanded.

Breitbart also sparked a controversy that ultimately led to the resignation of Weiner, whose problems began on May 28 when Bretibart's biggovernment.com posted a lewd photograph of an underwear-clad crotch and said it had been sent from Weiner's Twitter account to a Seattle woman.

Initially, Weiner lied, saying his account had been hacked. But he pointedly did not report the incident to law enforcement - a step that could have led the way to charges of wrongdoing far more serious than mere sexting.

Additionally, his public denials were less than solid - particularly when he told an interviewer that he could not "say with certitude" that he wasn't the man in the underwear photo.

Weiner's spokesman said the photo was just "a distraction" and that the congressman "doesn't know the person named by the hacker."

The congressman denied sending the photo and said he had retained an attorney and hired a private security company to figure out how someone could pull off such a prank.

But Weiner dropped that story line on June 6, offering a lengthy public confession at a Manhattan news conference, acknowledging to online activity involving at least six women.

Breitbart seldom showed restraint in his vitriol to his critics and seemed to relish in the negative attention his antics earned him.

After Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts died in 2009, Breitbart tweeted "Rest in Chappaquiddick" and called him "a special pile of human excrement." When critics questioned his tone, he tweeted they "missed my best ones!"

Breitbart is survived by his wife, Susannah Bean Breitbart, and four children.

good riddance to rubbish

they say he died of natural causes
all his rage and hate are not good for the heart

he and drudge are two disgusting human beings, that prey on anything good and they hate instead of love

How much damage has this a-hole done in the last 20-25 years?

Lee Atwater got his due, and now so has Andrew Breitbart.

No matter what he may have done...wishing death on the man makes us no better than they are...I never agreed with him...but revelling in his death is something I just won't do... <_<

Wishing death comes back around to bite you on the @ss...Don't give them the opportunity to make an issue out of this... :!:

Remember, we have the 'high ground'...don't roll in the gutter...The 1st Amendment gives us the right to speak freely...Conspiracy Theorists are already making 'hay' out of this... <_<

I don't agree with a lot of pundits...that doesn't mean I wish death on them... :coolwink:

If the situation was reversed and it was a Liberal that died...we wouldn't want them to dance with glee over it...If it was one of us then we would not take it lightly... :Y:

It was reported on Hannity's show that Andrew had enough tapes to bring down the President. They have to be lies upon lies like everything else that he did. The sad thing is that he gets away with it and people get fired or ruined. This seems to be a threat to the President. Is this the time for the FBI to get involved and see what the threats are against President Obama before something is released and the crazies go nuts?

you know, I was never into conspiracy theories througout my life (not into the JFK RFK MLK just that 3 great people were murdered for political reasons and other good people (like Teddy), were stopped from fully achieving, etc.)

I personally got let astray for a year or so around 911 but more than ever, I am convinced that people who live their life around conspiracy theories have a deep form of mental illness and are a danger to themselves and their fellow humans.

this whole anti-Obama haters movement, with one conspiracy after another is 100% ludacrist, in that if you logically look at the birthers, one is saying that a black man with big ears and a funny name was known back when he was born,
to be the president in 2008.
What another article suggested was that Obama had pictures from the 1960s with Bill AYers.

HELLO!!! Barack Obama was born in 1961...if there are pix of him with Bill Ayers, that makes him 7 or 8 years old at the time. (ooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh)

these people are sick.

and they prey upon people who have mental illness, and indeed, if one has a mental illness like that, and those sick people see things no one else does(because they are insane, they are a major danger to those they hate).

to the poster above(Rev. Wally),-no one here is wishing death on someone. Mr. Breitbart IS DEAD. But we don't have to be forced to say kind words on a political board for him. His life (unlike say Mother Teresa's), was not led for nice words.
He was a dirty trickster, and made a fortune doing his dirty deeds.
Good riddance to rubbish, and a hater. That is not wishing death. That is making a comment on someone who already is dead. I would myself not be saying nice words about any criminal (and this guy was interfering and crossing state lines to interfere with elections-
remind me, wasn't that the exact reason the Chicago 7 in the 1960s were arrested and put on trial?
Why wasn't this guy arrested? Why is Karl Rove a free man?(paid millions to spew his opinions on Fox?) Fox acts like these people are heroes.
Inciting crazy people to me, would seem like a crime that should be jailtime for these republican operatives.

People in general are tired of this crap.

(and the only people paying attention to these rightwingers anyhow are basically
the same people who already won't vote for Obama. So their power so to say,
is gone.
Even Rush L. found out that calling a woman a slut don't work in 2012, like it might have earlier.
People are fighting back, and not thinking these haters can run rampant.

Very true. I only wish Mr. Breitbart had felt the same way when Ted Kennedy died.

again- Rev. Wally starts with a rightwing statement that is just not true-

no one here wished him to die.

Some here, myself included honestly say goodriddance to him for what he did.

but don't let Rev. Wally switch it around- that does NOT in any means state we*ReElectAlGore2016 wished him dead at any time he was alive.

there is a major difference (and framing a response is what the rightwing gets away with time and again

(Go back to the 2000 election and the "we had a count, a recount, vomit"
it never happened in the first place, but they got the perception of it to appear as the record

Get your REVS straight...I am REV PAPA BEAR! Rev Wally hasn't been on the board for a while! :!:

Nobody singled you out, ReElectGore! So your MUST have some guilt complex!

I am just saying in a general sense...don't make 'light' of somebodies 'death'...you wouldn't want somebody doing that to you...now would you? :?:

Also it shines a SPOTLIGHT on what Breitbart may have had on Barack Obama...It is probably 'nothing'...but he died with it fresh from his lips...THAT could turn it into SOMETHING! :!:

THEY have TONS of AMMO! Let's NOT make ourselves easy TARGETS! :!:

I don't particulary CARE for RU$H LIMBAUGH or $EAN HANNITY! That DOESN'T mean I hope that they die or perish from existance! :!:

Breitbarts DEATH could put his allegations into the SPOTLIGHT!...That is give it MORE ATTENTION than what it DESERVES!

sorry for the name mix up Rev.Papa Bear.

however,-again- nobody here wished him dead, he already is dead and its after the point of his being dead. He is.

As Elvis Costello sang in his super hit "Tramp the dirt down" about Margret Thatcher, he wished her a long and happy life, but after she died he wanted to go to the place she rested at and "tramp the dirt down".

I think what happened to Andrew B. is KARMA
GOOD OLD FASHIONED KARMA came back at him like Karma has a way of happening to bad people.

again, NOBODY here wished any bad stuff in advance of his demise.
The threads itself only started AFTER he left the mortal world.

there is a difference.

And remember what indeed he said about Ted Kennedy.

I'll 2nd the motion, Papa Bear, about Rush's show dying. :D It would not hurt my feelings none if he found himself unemployed. But I certainly wouldn't wish him dead.

I think the top four worst commentators/"entertainers" are Rush, O'Rielly, Beck and Dobbs. They are all so hateful. I honestly can't think of anybody on the left who acts the way they do. These four are in a class by themselves.

Just for the record, I am NOT trying to switch anything around...All I AM saying is watch where you tread... ;)

No need to give the man a bigger voice from the 'grave' than he had when he was alive... :!:

I am NOT as 'right wing' as you lead others to believe...I voted for Obama...but sometimes I wonder why... <_<

The economy should be picking up now...I will give Obama credit for what he HAS done... :Y:

He DID get bin-Laden! Now he needs to bring home more troops from Afghanistan... :coolwink:

The price of fuel is still on the 'high' side...he needs to focus on bringing it back down...$3.49 a gallon here in an oil bearing state is pricey to say the least... :(

As for Breitbart...It is time to commit him to the 'dust' and move on... ;)
