There are 2 reasons to do better bases :
- THe original are to short => doesn't look good, hides the altitude and speed and it is sometimes difficult to catch. - Doesn't help to identificate the plain and so, we have to paint little marks whitch are difficult to see from the far we are playing on the table top (is it well said in english ?) There are the stuffs I used : - Hollow aluminium rods (less deformable theoricaly) of 2 different diameter : 2mm and 3mm (whitch are respecctively the diameter of the top and the botom of the original rods). - Wire of the same diameter of the center of my rods. 1ère étape : I cuted rods of 10cm (large for bomber and small for fighters). We can do it with a wire cutters, but it's better to do it with saw whitch doesn't crush the rod. Then I filed the ends of the each rod. ![]() 2ème étape : To reinforce the rods, I puted wire inside (1 in the small ones and 3 in the large ones). This is sincerly borring, because the wire is a rebel ! ![]() 3ème étape : We cut the wire at the and of the rod. We also can fine it again. ![]() 4ème étape : I didn't want to cram the hole of the base for little rods with green-stuff, whitch can be quirk... So I used the large tubes of aluminium. I cuted some little 1cm part of them and I inserted them at the end of each little rod (the diameter is exactly the same in the AI base). ![]() 5ème étape : I also ddn't wanted to see the brillance and reflections of the aluminium, I had a white spray to use before my trip, so... It also can help to evitate the oxydation. ![]() 6ème étape : I printed symbols on a simple paper to identifie different aircrafts. (note that I changed the size since I took this picture). 7ème étape : Some plains didn't have holes, but I made them alittle drill. 8ème étape : Finaly, just put the aircraft on the top of the rod ! I often use some PVA glue to maintain them efficiently but also to quit them from their base easily (because this glue is not powerfull). Conclusion : Just compare ! (My new tags are smaller and so looks better). -------------------- |

good basic tutorial. next time im in home depot or my local hardware store ill have to ask around for some of the piping. Im guessing I could find some of it in the plumbing section. what you have is thinner than the copper tubing I used to hook up my refrigerators ice maker, but not by much.
