Yeah, she's grown to be quite popular among the manga. She's a likable one.

It's interesting how Japan shows Americans. Since Tina lived in Hakata the most people notice is her Hakata accent not her English. She will be the character that grows not the others.

QUOTE (yardlet6 @ May 2 2005, 08:39 PM)
It's interesting how Japan shows Americans.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Is this really what they think of American women? Tina is loud, brassy and kind of obnoxious sometimes. Her manhandling of other women makes you wonder at first if she isn’t a borderline lez. But she has serious hots for Kaoru, so that answers that. It’s just her way of trying to make her way in a closed society that she can never really be part of, no matter how long she lives there.

I don’t remember if it ever says what her parents do, but I can imagine her as a military brat, learning to fend for herself in foreign lands. She makes friends with other people on the margins, like the nerds in the photography club, which is how she knows Kaoru. She likes embarrassing him in public, just to see him blush. She’s really off-putting at first, but she grows on you, especially when you start to see her soft inside, as Miclo said.

I have volume eight of the manga and it gives a real close look at Tina. Read it. You'll love her more and feel for her also.

Yardlet6 -- I wonder if we have the same series of the English AYA manga. I notice others have referred to volumes I didn’t know were released yet, but I’m only aware of the Tokyopop publication, of which only eight volumes have been released in the US so far. In the volume eight I have, Tina doesn’t get mentioned much, but she has some nice chapters earlier where you get to know her pretty well.

Her relationship with Kaoru is almost as complicated as his with Aoi. Like all the girls in the house (with the possible exception of Miyabi), she has a crush on Kaoru. Although an American, she feels accepted by the group as an equal. But she isn’t sure that acceptance extends to romance, and she’s afraid to find out. There are some bridges that, once you cross, you can’t go back.

She keeps hinting at flirtation, then backtracks to her “just one of the guys” bluster. On top of it all, she may have deep-seated doubts about her gender preference, the way she gets touchy-feely with the other girls, pretending it’s all in fun. I think her hard drinking may be a cover for her pain.

I agree with Kona. What Yardlet6 describes sounds more like the buzz about vol 9: "Tina's parents call her up, followed by Tina dragging Kaoru off to see her favorite places in Japan." I have in the past week seen vol 9 in a bookstore, but haven't had a chance to read it yet.

Vol 8 has two chapters about first importance Aoi second importance Kaoru. Then a chapter with those roles reversed: first Kaoru second Aoi. The next chapter, Special 2, "Piano", focusses on Mayu. Then the last five chapters are mostly about Chika, and about Kaoru's graduate entry examination. I think the biggest part Tina plays in vol 8 is in the last chapter. Chika and Tina have a "discussion" about Tina's affection for Kaoru. -- not that it wasn't evident during the beach scene in vol 7 chapter 56.
