Can someone recommend any romantic anime that is as good as Ai Yori Aoshi.

Ai Yori Aoshi is (IMO) top drawer.
Tough to recommend a romantic anime/manga as good as Ai Yori Aoshi.
[plus I am a manga only person ...]

My first recommendation would be 'Chobits'. The manga develops at least 5 wrenching romantic stories.

Anything else I might say would be "almost as good as ..."

The 'Ai Yori Aoshi' manga is (IMO) top drawer.
I hear that the 'Ai Yori Aoshi' anime puts more emphasis on comedy and fanservice (a euphemism for a sort of soft core porn). Lessens it in my opinion.

You ask for my "almost as good as" manga offerings.
You might try

'Wish' by CLAMP. Theme = "There are some wishes that cannot be fulfilled by oneself". "Can some wishes be fulfilled alone or do you sometimes need help? If you didn't need help...why bother to fall in love?"

'Video Girl Ai'. Some parts of the manga are good. Some parts seem to take a long time. I considered several choices of a quick-look. Here is one: "
Ai to Moemi and Yota: "You're right Moemi. I do love Yota. // but ... I love you just as much Moemi! // But even though you're both right here ... the two I love so much ... Yota and Moemi ... You're both standing here ... but where have the two of you gone!? // "Why do you have to hurt each other? Why can't we go back to that day when we all ate dinner together?" // to Moemi: "meet me tomorrow."

'Figure 17'. A middle-school offering. I hear that the anime is "better". A girl is suffering from depression. She lost her mother at birth. Her father has to relocate to Hokkaido. She doesn't know anyone and sees life through the long sad tunnel-vision of depression. Then weird circumstances bring another girl into her life who is her exact duplicate, except really supportive towards her.

There are chapters in 'Oh My Goddess' that work the romantic
angle nicely.
*) the shinnentai chapter in vol 8, 'Mara Strikes Back'.
'You're so bad' in vol 9, 'The Ninja Masters') Skuld trying to work out some feelings.
'Childhood's End' in vol 13, 'Childhood's End'. Skuld trying some more to work out her feelings. A chapter at the end of the volume, about Chihiro, is also good.
*) Skuld gets her own angel in vol 14, 'Queen Sayoko'. And loses it.

I hear that a yet-to-be-released-in-the-USA chapter, about the Gate between Heaven and Earth, is very good.

Saikano is a good romance anime. its about two highschool students Shuji and chise clumsily learing about love. But their courtship is intrupted when chise is taken by the military and turned intoa powerful secret weapon. Foreigh bombers attack the city of Sapproro and shuji and his friends are caught up in the devastiation. Suddenly the enemy planes are wiped out and Shuji witnesses the awesome firepower of the ultimate weapon: his girlfriend Chise.

Another good anime is DNAngel which is a romantic/comedy. Its about a teenager named Daisuke Niwa whos has a particulary hard destiny and he doesnt even know it yet. Every male of teh Niwa Family possesses a peculiar gene taht matures on their fourteenth birthday and is activated when hes in love. Now anytime Daisuke becomes enamored with the object of his desires he transforms into the legendary thief phantom Dark.
